The rosin column spHt is controUed by the fatty acid content specified for rosin. This is usuaUy set at 2% fatty acids. At the high temperature near the bottom of the column and the reboUer, rosin dimerizes to some extent. By taking rosin from the column as a sidestream above the bottom, its rosin dimer content is minimized. Because of its high purity, sidestream rosin product is prone to crystallization. [Pg.305]

Rice-Bran Wax. Rice-bran wax [8016-60-2] is extracted from cmde rice-bran oil. It can be degummed, the fatty acid content reduced by solvent extraction, and bleached. The wax is primarily composed of esters of lignoceric acid (43 wt %), behenic acid (16 wt %), and 22 02 alcohols (28 wt %). Rice-bran wax may be used in some food apphcations under the regulations described in 21 CFR 172.890. [Pg.315]

Solvent extraction in batch or continuous systems is used to recover most of the residual oil from the presscake. Heptane, hexane, or a mixture of these solvents is used to recover the oil. The solvent-extracted presscake is steam stripped to recover solvent and a residual meal known as castor pomace, containing 1% residual oil. The solvent extracted oil is also processed for solvent recovery (qv). The oil from the extraction procedure is darker than the mechanically pressed oil and has a higher free fatty acid content. It is sometimes referred to as a No. 3 castor oil and is used for blending with higher quaUty oils that are well above No. 1 specifications. [Pg.152]

Earlier analytical results from the gas chromatographic analysis of fatty acids seemed to be very high. Williams [102] repeated much of the early work, using extreme care in the avoidance of contamination, and found very much smaller quantities. Papers concerned with the fatty acid content of the water column and sediment include [ 103-109]. [Pg.392]

Commercially available IVFEs provide calories and essential fatty acids. These products differ in triglyceride source, fatty acid content, and essential fatty acid concentration. [Pg.685]

The resynthesized triglycerides invariably contain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in an approximate 2 1 ratio. Typically, nearly all of the fatty acid content of adipose tissue can be accounted for by just six different types of molecule with palmitate (06 0) and oleate (08 1) together contributing over 75% of the total. Turnover studies suggest that for most people, much of the fat is metabolically relatively inert acting as depot with a long half-life, and only a smaller component of the stored fat being readily accessible. [Pg.304]

Tomlinson and Rich have also considered the reaction of ozone (at 1 ppm for 30 min) with lipid components of the leaves. They found that a change in the fatty acid composition as a result of ozone treatment was an increase in the saturated fatty acid content. [Pg.451]

The fatty acid content of our diet has important consequences for health. Several fatty acid are essential dietary components. In general, saturated and trans fatty acids are inimical to good health. In contrast, omega-3 fatty acids are favorable to good health. [Pg.252]
