Reversing applications

Hub bores are usually straight, although for some special applications taper bores are sometimes specified. For smaller diameters, bores are designed for clearance fits and a set screw is used over the key. The major advantage of a clearance fit is that hubs can be easily assembled and disassembled. For larger diameters, the bores are designed for interference fits without setscrews. For rapid-reversing applications, interference fits are required. 

In the first, critical load, approach, the single quality objective is used to calculate a critical load. The second, steady state, allows comparison with various quality objectives. Both approaches, which are the reverse applications of the same model (Figure 1), have their advantages and disadvantages. 

For aqueous solutions of electrolytes, a concise method of tabulating such entropy data is in terms of the individual ions, because entropies for the ions can be combined to give information for a wide variety of salts. Polymers degrade before they vaporize, so indirect methods must be used to determine their solubility parameters. The simplest of these methods is a two-valued bar graph, as is illustrated in Figure 2.24. A series of solvents of known solubility parameter are used. Each is tested to determine if it is a solvent for the polymer. The yes or no answers are then plotted at different heights along the <5, abscissa. The value of corresponding to the midpoint of the yes bar is taken to be the solubility parameter S2 of the polymer. This is a reverse application of equation (24). The argument is now that solvents that are found to dissolve the polymer must have solubility parameters close to the unknown solubility parameter of the polymer.

Russian workers have looked at acoustic waves produced during the electrochemical oxidation of antimony [ 147], almost a reverse application of sonoelectrochemistry. Antimony was anodized in aqueous H3B03 solutions galvanostatically (2.2 x 1(T3 A/cm2) and isothermally (292 K). The formation voltage increased to >200 V with time, which is characteristic of the valve metals. Acoustic waves were observed in this electrochemical oxidation with amplitudes that did not differ essentially from the very beginning of the oxidation. The energy of the acoustic wave had only one sharply distinct peak which coincided in time with the appearance of the electrochemical breakdown products.

Return period can also be used for the assessment of structural capacity and vulnerability of a structure in order to design proper mitigation measures. In other words, it can be used to quantify the safety levels and structural deficiencies in a more straightforward manner and to assess the improvement of structural performance after certain retrofitting interventions. For this purpose, Raffaele and Fiore (2013) presented a simple methodology (based on the reverse application of the well-known N2 method) that allows the assessment of the return period when the elastic period and the capacity of the examined structure for a given limit state are available. Subsequently, this so-called capacitive return period can be used to determine the seismic capacity and the reference life for any limit state considered.
