Tapered bore gun

There are two serious disadvantages of the folding skirt projectile. The taper prohibits the use of std ammo in tapered bore guns and also increases tremendously the time costs of producing both gun ammo.

An alternative design of squeeze bore was one in which a tapered extension was placed on the muzzle of an otherwise conventional gun [see also Salvo Squeezebore (SSB) in this VoiJ. The projectiles used with these two classes were much the same in design, though experience showed that the taper bore shot had to be somewhat stronger in construction than the squeeze bore models owing to the different times thruout which the shells underwent stress in compression... 

Towards the end of WWII the taper bore concept was gradually discarded in favor of the squeeze bore designs, since these were a good deal easier to manufacture. Making a tapered and rifled gun barrel was no easy task, even with sophisticated machine tools, whereas production of a smoothbore squeeze extension to fit the muzzle of an otherwise standard gun was much less exacting and less wasteful of time and... 

The band, which is larger in diam than the bore of the gun and tapered at the forward end corresponding to the forcing cone at the origin of rifling, performs the following functions ... 

In rifle and shot guns the fourteen and sixteen thread win be found to predominate. In unbreech iog guns that have bm made by "experts of some country town, who built the arms to order/ ax in overhauling guns that have been repaired at the same kind of establishments, it will not be uncommon to find threads in the barrels that have been cut with a blacksmith s taper tap, and the pin tapered to suit the thread so formed. It will ho nothing uncommon to find a breech that is made to one side of the bore, or made with a crooked thread. 

Variations on the basic drill types include twist drill (either three flute, taper shank, bit shank and straight flute), gun drills, spade drill, indexable insert drill, ejector drill, hole saw, trepanning and solid boring drill.
