Another important property of the wave function is its relation to average properties of physically observable quantities, illustrated by Eq. (19.43). Knowing the wave function of a system, we can calculate the average value of any measurable quantity. Thus, in a somewhat mysterious way, the wave function has hidden in it all of the physically important properties of the system. 

The Schrodinger equation opened the way to the systematic mathematical treatment of all atomic and molecular phenomena. The predictions of this equation for atoms and molecules have been confirmed without exception. It is therefore the basis for any modern discussion of atomic and molecular structure.

In retrospect, this study has demonstrated the limitations of two commonly accepted methods of analysing solubilisation and micellar catalysis, respectively. These chemorational techniques have generated great interest in, and high expectations for, the acceleration of development of innovative pesticides. However, many purportedly successful appHcations of QSAR procedures have reHed on the quaHtative insights traditionally associated with art-based pesticide development programs. Retrospective QSAR analyses have, however, been helpful in identifying the best compounds for specific uses (17). Chemorational techniques have also found some appHcations in the development of pesticides from natural product lead compounds, the best known examples being the synthetic pyrethroid insecticides (19) modeled on the plant natural product, pyrethmm.

Pentoxifylline is stmcturaHy related to other methylxanthine derivatives such as caffeine [58-02-2] (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine), theobromine [83-67-0] (3,7-dimethylxanthine), and theophylline [58-55-9] (3,7-dihydro-1,3-dimethyl-1 H-piirine-2,6-dione or 1,3-dimethylxanthine), which also show radioprotective activity in some instances, suggesting that methylxanthines as a dmg class may radioprotect through a common mechanism (see Alkaloids). In a retrospective analysis of cervical and endometrial cancer patients receiving primary or adjuvant XRT, no association between caffeine consumption and incidence of acute radiation effects has been found. However, there was a decreased incidence of severe late radiation injury in cervical cancer patients who consumed higher levels of caffeine at the time of thek XRT (121). The observed lack of correlation between caffeine consumption and acute radiation effects is consistent with laboratory investigations using pentoxifylline.

In order to avoid conception, abstinence from sexual intercourse during the fertile period of the menstmal cycle must be practiced (77,104). It has been deterrnined that the fertile period in women occurs before menstmation (105,106), and formulas have been developed to determine the fertile and infertile days of the menstmal cycle. Ovulation has been linked to a cycHc shift in basal body temperature (107), which can be used retrospectively to determine the time of ovulation.

The problems often encountered in retrospective cohort studies include poor exposure data and incomplete follow-up of all individuals. The accuracy of health outcome data may also be low. 

The bromination of 4,5-j -dihydrocortisone acetate in buffered acetic acid does not proceed very cleanly (<70%) and, in an attempt to improve this step in the cortisone synthesis, Holysz ° investigated the use of dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent for bromination. Improved yields were obtained (although in retrospect the homogeneity and structural assignments of some products seem questionable.) It was also observed that the combination of certain metal halides, particularly lithium chloride and bromide in hot DMF was specially effective in dehydrobromination of 4-bromodihydrocortisone acetate. Other amide solvents such as dimethylacetamide (DMA) and A-formylpiperidine can be used in place of DMF. It became apparent later that this method of dehydrobromination is also prone to produce isomeric unsaturated ketones. When applied to 2,4-dibromo-3-ketones, a substantial amount of the A -isomer is formed.
