Basal body temperature

In order to avoid conception, abstinence from sexual intercourse during the fertile period of the menstmal cycle must be practiced (77,104). It has been deterrnined that the fertile period in women occurs before menstmation (105,106), and formulas have been developed to determine the fertile and infertile days of the menstmal cycle. Ovulation has been linked to a cycHc shift in basal body temperature (107), which can be used retrospectively to determine the time of ovulation. 

Increases the basal body temperature and inhibit uterine contractions by decreasing sensitivity of myometrium to oxytocin. 

E. Therapeutic response Follicle maturation during follitropin beta therapy is best monitored by daily ultrasonography and daily measurement of serum and/or urine estradiol levels. Basal Body Temperature. Basal body temperature charts have long been accepted as simple and cost-effective indicators of ovulation. Ovulation is associated with a rapid rise in body temperature, by 0.5 °F, which persists through the luteal phase. The rise in temperature is due to the increased progesterone concentration. However, like progesterone, the rise in body temperature is evident only retrospectively and therefore does not predict imminent ovulation in a way helpful for timmg intercourse.

Pregnanedione and pregnanolone produce a pronounced but temporary fever when given intramuscularly or intravenously to man, an effect so far not produced in experimental animals (56, 57, 75). Likewise, progesterone elevates basal body temperature in man (36, 52).

CNS EFFECTS Progesterone increases basal body temperature by about 0.6°C at midcycle when ovulation occurs. Progesterone also increases the ventilatory response of the respiratory centers to COj and leads to reduced arterial and alveolar Pco in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy. 

The results show the drug is sufficiently absorbed from these rings to cause a rise in basal body temperature and to inhibit LH release. Removal of the silastic ring leads to rapid cessation of drug activity. Subsequent studies demonstrated that a constant release rate of 550 yg MA from a vaginal ring is sufficient to inhibit ovulation.Lower doses of MA may also prove to be effective. 

Disorders affecting ovulation account for 30%-40% of cases of female infertility [1]. Measures of ovarian function include measurement of basal body temperature, endometrial biopsy, measurement of serum progesterone level, endocrine tests, and monitoring of follicle growth with US. Thus the role of MR imaging is limited to assessment of whether a pituitary adenoma is present [20]. 

Since HORD was used to feed animals, its toxicity was investigated in several animal species. In rats and dogs, HORD showed a positive inotropic effect, increased systolic and diastolic pressures, enhanced peripheral blood volume, and inhibited gut movement. All effects are short and only observable at high doses [43]. HORD administered at an oral dose of 2.0 mg/kg body weight to horses did not change heart rate, respiratory rate, basal body temperature, and behavior. But when HORD was injected by rapid i.v. route to horses, defecation within 60 s, substantial respiratory distress, approximately 250% increase in heart rate, and profuse sweating were observed [44]. These effects were transient and abolished within 30 min.
