It would be difficult to over-estimate the extent to which the BET method has contributed to the development of those branches of physical chemistry such as heterogeneous catalysis, adsorption or particle size estimation, which involve finely divided or porous solids in all of these fields the BET surface area is a household phrase. But it is perhaps the very breadth of its scope which has led to a somewhat uncritical application of the method as a kind of infallible yardstick, and to a lack of appreciation of the nature of its basic assumptions or of the circumstances under which it may, or may not, be expected to yield a reliable result. This is particularly true of those solids which contain very fine pores and give rise to Langmuir-type isotherms, for the BET procedure may then give quite erroneous values for the surface area. If the pores are rather larger—tens to hundreds of Angstroms in width—the pore size distribution may be calculated from the adsorption isotherm of a vapour with the aid of the Kelvin equation, and within recent years a number of detailed procedures for carrying out the calculation have been put forward but all too often the limitations on the validity of the results, and the difficulty of interpretation in terms of the actual solid, tend to be insufficiently stressed or even entirely overlooked. Before a procedure can provide useful analytical information, it is necessary to demonstrate that it is capable of providing acceptable results. Validation is an evaluation of whether the precision and accuracy obtained by following the procedure are appropriate for the problem. In addition, validation ensures that the written procedure has sufficient detail so that different analysts or laboratories following the same procedure obtain comparable results. Ideally, validation uses a standard sample whose composition closely matches the samples for which the procedure was developed. The comparison of replicate analyses can be used to evaluate the procedure s precision and accuracy. Intralaboratory and interlaboratory differences in the procedure also can be evaluated. In the absence of appropriate standards, accuracy can be evaluated by comparing results obtained with a new method to those obtained using a method of known accuracy. The ROTOBERTY internal recycle laboratory reactor was designed to produce experimental results that can be used for developing reaction kinetics and to test catalysts. These results are valid at the conditions of large-scale plant operations. Since internal flow rates contacting the catalyst are known, heat and mass transfer rates can be calculated between the catalyst and the recycling fluid. The effects of confinement due to matrix species on the PMF between colloids is very well seen in Fig. 1(c). At a small matrix density, only the solvent effects contribute to the formation of the PMF. At a higher matrix density, the solvent preserves its role in modulating the PMF however, there appears another scale. The PMF also becomes modulated by matrix species additional repulsive maxima and attractive minima develop, reflecting configurations of colloids separated by one or two matrix particles or by a matrix particle covered by the solvent layer. It seems very difficult to simulate models of this sort. However, previous experience accumulated in the studies of bulk dispersions and validity of the PY closure results gives us confidence that the results presented are at least qualitatively correct. [Pg.311]
