Research approaches participatory

Our research aims at the creation of an organizational simulation model, which is adequate for the participatory design of complex workflows and project structures (see Sect. 3.4) in the process industries. The research approach is based on the C3 notation. The notation s plain graphical basic elements and the consideration of an advanced methodical approach, e.g., for communication analysis, is an adequate foundation for simulation studies by means of high level Petri nets.

On a smaller scale, a facility manager may rely on participatory management techniques, such as quality circles or task teams, or may pursue a more traditionally hierarchical approach. Similarly, a division may display entirely different management styles in several different function areas the sales organization may be highly structured, while research and development is more collegial and informal.

The decision to adopt a participatory approach in our research reflected the premise that the responsibility of environmental scientists is to provide reliable Information that will help society resolve its environmental problems. While the premise may be laudatory, it is slippery to apply. For example, the typical means of supplying new information to society takes the form of scientific papers published in English in international journals (e.g. Brown et al. 1992, Kainer et al. 1998). In Brazilian Amazonia, we have found, however, that information in this format does not easily reach the local and regional decisionmakers, few of whom read English or have effective access to scientific literature. Also, those who have the most at stake, the local communities, require a different mode of information transfer.

Feminist research has much in common with action research. Feminist perspectives and activism have distinctively contributed to participatory action research in terms of epistemological critiques, the development of alternative methods and the traditional commitment to activism within and outside the university (Brydon-Miller et al. 2004). Feminist theories on gender and technology, especially in computer science and informatics, are therefore another important background of the Bremen Summer University concept. We follow the approach that technology design and innovation evolve from gendered practices and policies. 

However, a community that uses its natural intelligence and resourcefulness can begin to make sense of the problems and evaluate the risks to its people and the surrounding environment. A community can solicit support and help from experts in the field community participatory research is becoming an accepted approach to scientific investigation. 

Masters of Public Health in Health Education. Miller s research focuses on participatory and visual approaches to education, health, and community development. Miller is currendy an instructor in the Department of Anthropology. Previously, Miller taught Anthropology at a community college in Oregon where he also coordinated the Multicultural Center.
