In 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a cost analysis of various remediation technologies, including thermal desorption. Thermal desorption technology costs were analyzed based on operation and maintenance (O M) costs, capital costs, and other site-specific data (D22449H, p. 3-1). [Pg.508]

The thermal blanket technology does have several limitations. High soil moisture increases the cost of remediation involving thermal desorption because of the energy required to vaporize the water. In addition, treatment within the saturated zone is not feasible since treatment temperatures would be limited to the boiling point of water (i.e., 100°C). Finally, the technology is only effective to an approximate depth of 0.5 m below ground surface. [Pg.1042]

The Remediation Technologies, Inc. (RETEC), Thermatek thermal desorption system is an ex situ high-temperature treatment technology that treats soils, sediments, and sludges contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The process uses a conventional Holo-Flite thermal desorption unit with RETEC s proprietary modifications, using an indirect heating source. [Pg.1064]

In a collection of synopses innovative site remediation technologies (43), technologies are categorized into bioremediation, chemical treatment, thermal treatment, vapor extraction, soil washing, solidification/stabilization, and other physical treatments. Here separation technologies are contained in the thermal treatment, vapor extraction, soil washing, and other physical treatment sections. Key technologies addressed are ... [Pg.17]

The chemistry of phosphate complexation in inorganic systems is important in agriculture and soil science and more recently in remediation technology because of the low solubility product of many of the metal phosphate salts. A large number of inorganic phosphate phases have been identified [1,2]. In the area of catalysis the aluminophosphates have been investigated both as catalysts and catalyst supports due to their surface acidity and thermal stability. Re-... [Pg.157]

Existing soil treatments offering solutions for most pollutants include physical, chemical, thermal, and biological techniques. Most physical treatment processes remove pollutants from the soil-water complex for further treatment or disposal in a more concentrated form. There are, however, some pollutants that are difficult to remove using conventional remediation technologies. Some of them are not only persistent or toxic but also have low solubility and strong adsorption to soil surfaces and organic matter in low-permeability clayey soils [5]. [Pg.738]
