Reinforced thermoplastic composites

Composites. High molecular weight PPS can be combiaed with long (0.6 cm to continuous) fiber to produce advanced composite materials (131). Such materials having PPS as the polymer matrix have been developed by usiag a variety of reinforcements, including glass, carbon, and Kevlar fibers as mat, fabric, and unidirectional reinforcements. Thermoplastic composites based on PPS have found application ia the aircraft, aerospace, automotive, appliance, and recreation markets (see Composite materials, polymer-matrix). [Pg.450]

Recycling more effective solutions are sought. The development of the mono-material concept is favourable to thermoplastics and self-reinforcing thermoplastic composites such as self-reinforced polypropylene (Curv from BP). [Pg.86]

Obtain specific properties using, for example, a self-lubricating composite insert. Discontinuous fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites can also be overmoulded onto GMT sheets. [Pg.744]

U.S. Pat. No. 5,288,772 [75] discloses a cellulose-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composition for compression molding, where thermoplastic material is polypropylene, or a mixture of polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene (40-90% of plastic by weight), and the cellulosic material (10-60% by weight) was milled scrap newspaper with an initial moisture content of at least 30% by weight. The patentees suggest that lignin present in the cellulosic scrap provides a coherent mass of thermoplastic and cellulosic material. [Pg.87]

Laminar composites are combinations of several layers of composite sheets that are bonded together. Polyolefin sandwich structures are a laminar composite. They are composed of two or more layers of polyolefin with a different material in between the layer (long fiber mat or short fiber). Sandwich panel and laminar composites are common methods for thermoset resins and thermoplastic composites. This simple method can be applied to natural fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites using the hot press method. The addition of a reinforcement material between polyolefin layers does not require extrusion or injection molding and minimizes fiber degradation [35, 36]. [Pg.162]
