Work of fracture

A common representation of the behavior implied by (4.31) within a continuum framework is that of separation of adjacent planes of otherwise elastic materials, with that separation being resisted by a cohesive traction [Pg.269]

Radiolytic oxidation alters most of the important properties of graphite, including strength, elastic modulus, work of fracture, thermal conductivity, permeability, and diffusivity but does not affect the thermal expansion coefficient or Poisson s ratio. The effects of radiolytic oxidation on the properties of a wide range of graphites have been studied in the U.K. [7,73,74] where it was found that, to a first approximation, they can be described by similar relationships ... [Pg.471]

Tests by Roe et al. [63] with unidirectional jute fiber-reinforced UP resins show a linear relationship (analogous to the linear mixing rule) between the volume content of fiber and Young s modulus and tensile strength of the composite over a range of fiber content of 0-60%. Similar results are attained for the work of fracture and for the interlaminate shear strength (Fig. 20). Chawla et al. [64] found similar results for the flexural properties of jute fiber-UP composites. [Pg.805]

Sometimes the failure occurs by propagation of a crack that starts at the top and travels downward until the interface is completely debonded. In this case, the fracture mechanics analysis using the energy balance approach has been applied [92] in which P, relates to specimen dimensions, elastic constants of fiber and matrix, initial crack length, and interfacial work of fracture (W,). [Pg.831]

Recently, Oldfield Ellis (1991) have examined the reinforcement of glass-ionomer cement with alumina (Safil) and carbon fibres. The introduction of only small amounts of carbon fibres (5% to 7-5% by volume) into cements based on MP4 and G-338 glasses was found to increase considerably both the elastic modulus and flexural strength. There was an increase in work of fracture attributable to fibre pull-out. A modulus as high as 12-5 GPa has been attained with the addition of 12% by voliune of fibre into MP4 glass (Bailey et al, 1991). Results using alumina fibre were less promising as there was no fibre pull-out because of the brittle nature of alumina fibres which fractured under load. [Pg.164]

In this expression ex is the modulus perpendicular to the chain axis and wj is the work of fracture for the transverse tensile stress. Equation 39 demonstrates that the Griffith length Lq increases rapidly with decreasing orientation of the chain angle 0. [Pg.35]

Brocklehurst [37] has written an exhaustive review of the early work (prior to 1977) on fracture in polycrystalline graphite. Much of this work focused on the fracture behavior of nuclear graphites. In most investigations considered, conventional fracture mechanics tests and analysis were performed for macroscopic cracks. LEFM provided an adequate criterion for failure. Additionally, results on work of fracture, strain energy release rate, and fatigue crack propagation were reported. [Pg.517]

Toughness may be defined by impact energy or work of fracture, the area under the load-strain curve, which provides a practical combination of strength and elongation at break. [Pg.26]

The term fracture toughness or toughness with a symbol, R or Gc, used throughout this chapter refers to the work dissipated in creating new fracture surfaces of a unit nominal cross-sectional area, or the critical potential energy release rate, of a composite specimen with a unit kJ/m. Fracture toughness is also often measured in terms of the critical stress intensity factor, with a unit MPay/m, based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) principle. The various micro-failure mechanisms that make up the total specific work of fracture or fracture toughness are discussed in this section. [Pg.239]

The failure processes in thermoplastics composites with aligned glass fibers of sub-critical transfer length have been characterized (Lauke and Schultrich, 1983, 1986a, b Lauke et al., 1985 Lauke and Pompe, 1988) in terms of matrix fracture mode which is determined mainly by the ductility of the matrix material, loading rate and temperature. The total specific work of fracture, / t, is expressed as the sum... [Pg.252]

A third mechanism operating at the crack tip is the energy required to pull the broken fiber out of the matrix (Fig. 18). The work required is the product of the shear strength times the pull-out length (lp). The total work of fracture can now be estimated as the sum of each of the contributions of the above mechanisms resulting in the relationship... [Pg.24]

A pendulum may be used (Charpy, Izod, tensile impact) to determine the work of fracture (Brown, 1999). Instrumented devices provided with piezoelectric transducers are also available load-time or load-displacement curves can be recorded (Merle et al., 1985), giving as much information as static tests. Servohydraulic or pneumatic setups and falling weight devices are also used. The drop ball test from the US Food and Drug Administration, is especially useful for optical lenses (acrylate networks). [Pg.388]

Since fibrous monolithic ceramics are intended for use in applications where stresses are primarily generated due to bending, strength and work-of-fracture in flexure are measured to evaluate their basic mechanical properties. In addition, factors determining the manner of crack propagation should be... [Pg.15]
