Regulation, cellular

One of these motifs, called the helix-turn-helix motif, is specific for DNA binding and is described in detail in Chapters 8 and 9. The second motif is specific for calcium binding and is present in parvalbumin, calmodulin, tro-ponin-C, and other proteins that bind calcium and thereby regulate cellular activities. This calcium-binding motif was first found in 1973 by Robert Kretsinger, University of Virginia, when he determined the structure of parvalbumin to 1.8 A resolution. [Pg.24]

In contemporary societies replete with various industries and automobiles, NO (NO, N02, and N03) has been recognized to be one of the important factors responsible for air pollution. Only two decades ago, NO was found to be an essential molecule that regulates cellular/molecular functions in mammals. NO is also enzymatically synthesized in nonmammals, invertebrates, and yeasts. Therefore, the origin of NO may date back to the birth of life arising from single cell organisms living around 3-billion years ago. [Pg.855]

One of the primary ways in which cold causes injury to cells is by the loss of the capability to regulate cellular volume. This occurs because of the decrease in the available energy (ATP) caused by hypothermia and ischemia which is needed by the membrane-bound ion pumps, the increased rate of leakage of ions through the plasma membrane, and the decreased activity of the membrane-bound ion pumps, especially the Na-pump. [Pg.389]
