The lamp black apparatus consists of a cast-iron pan that holds the liquid feedstock, which is surmounted by a fireproof flue hood lined with refractory bricks. The air gap between the pan and the hood, as well as the vacuum present in the system, help to regulate the air supply and thus enable the manufacturer to fine-tune the carbon black s ultimate properties. Though radiant heat from the hood causes the raw material to vaporize and partially combust. Most of it is converted into carbon black. [Pg.175]

Performance of refractories exposed to chlorides can best be determined by measuring relative performance of different refractory types in actual service using small test panels of different compositions and physical properties. A modified ASTM C279 acid solubility test using an HCI solution can also give insights into the relative performance of various types of refractory brick in chloride containing environments. [Pg.208]

Is a high thermal expansion coefflcient an advantageous or deleterious property of a refractory brick Explain briefly the reasoning behind your answer. [Pg.152]

Test certificates for refractory bricks, cements, and castable lining material (their properties and compositions) shall be obtained. Some typical values are given below. Plant engineers may specify more stringent conditions to suit the operating requirements. [Pg.61]

Thickness of shell should not be less than 12 mm. Boiler quality steel should be used since these units run at high internal temperature for long time continuously. Internal lining details (e.g. type of insulating and refractory bricks used, their alumina percentage, thickness of layer, castable refractory, expansion joints provided. (Vendor to submit copies of their test certificates giving chemical analysis, refractory properties, thermal conductivities if asked for by the purchaser. The expected maximum temperature at outer surface of the shell should not normally exceed 60—65 °C.)... [Pg.249]

There are four major categories of corrosion resistant brick red shale, fireclay, refractory, and carbon. Each type has somewhat different properties and compositions. However, all resist attack by most acids and are fired at 2000°F/1093°C therefore, they are capable of handling process temperature at least that high. Their application temperatures, however, are determined by their resistance to thermal shock. In general, red shale is for ambient temperatures, fireclay for temperatures up to 1000°F/538°C, and refractory brick up to 3000 F/1649 C. [Pg.181]

Ladle Brick. A refractory brick of suitable shape and properties for use in the lining of a ladle unless otherwise stated it is assumed that a ladle for the casting of steel is implied. Ladle bricks are almost invariably made of grogged fireclay the features required are good shape, uniform size, low porosity and, if possible, a permanent expansion when exposed to high temperature. Refractory bricks in the 50% and 60% AI2O3 classes exhibit improved refractoriness over fireclay products. There are two frmdamental mineral mixtures used in producing these classes of brick, and the physical properties of the products depend, in part, on which mineral mixture was used in the manufacture. [Pg.97]
