Reed-Sternberg cell

Malignant Reed-Sternberg cells overexpress nuclear factor-K B, which is associated with cell proliferation and anti-apoptotic signals. Infections with viral and bacterial pathogens upregulate nuclear factor-K B. Epstein-Barr virus is found in many, but not all, HL tumors. 

Diagnosis requires the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells in the lymph node biopsy. 

There are four major morphologic subtypes of this form of HL lymphocyte-rich cHL, nodular sclerosis HL, mixed cellularity HL, and lymphocyte-depleted HL. The tumor cells in cHL are mononuclear Hodgkin cells and multinucleated Reed-Sternberg cells (HRS). Similar to the neoplastic cells in NLPHL, the HRS cells have been found to be derived from germinal center B cells (K33, M9).
