Multiple overlaying pollution sources and redistribution pattern at the areas of oil exploration fields is accompanied by the shifting of pollutant spoils for a long distance, in many cases up to river channels and river water pollution. The ground water pollution is a matter of fact (Figure 10).

As mentioned earlier, in curved channels a secondary flow pattern of two counter-rotating vortices is formed. Similarly to the situation depicted in Figrue 2.43, these vortices redistribute fluid volumes in a plane perpendicular to the main flow direction. Such a transversal mass transfer reduces the dispersion, a fact reflected in the dependence in Eq. (108) at large Dean numbers. A number of methods and models have been used at sites to estimate potential risks from exposure to lead. One method is the use of prevalence data for estimating PbB levels. In this case, PbB measurements can be made at a site and extrapolated to other sites with similar environmental and demographic data. Limitations of this method include site-to-site variability with respect to, among other things, children s behavioral patterns, age, and bioavailability issues. Estimation of past exposures can be problematic because of redistribution of Pb out of the blood compartment since PbB is only an indicator of recent exposure (<90 days). 

Two parameters, the redistribution index (Uts) and the reduced partitioning parameter (IR), are used to describe the redistribution processes of trace elements in contaminated arid soils (Figs. 6.5-6.6) (Han et al., 2003a). The redistribution index depicts the removal or attainment of element-contaminated soils from or to the fractional distribution pattern characteristic of non-amended soils. However, the reduced partitioning parameter quantifies the relative binding intensity of trace elements in soils. 

From a practical point of view, for improved solids distribution, the indications are for innovative design of obstructing structures next to the wall to break the falling sheet of solids in order to equalize their flow pattern across the column through repeated redistribution.
