The mechanical integrity section of the PSM standard ensures that the equipment, piping, relief systems, controls, and alarms are mechanically sound and operational. The requirements include (1) written procedures to maintain functioning systems, (2) training regarding preventive maintenance, (3) periodic inspections and testing based on vendor recommendations, (4) a process to correct deficiencies, and (5) a process to ensure that all equipment and spare parts are suitable. 

The vendor shall indicate on the preceding parts lists which parts are recommended spares for start-up and normal maintenance as referenced in 6.2.3, Item f (Table 6-1). The vendor shall forward the lists to the purchaser promptly after receipt of the reviewed drawings and in time to permit order and delivery of the parts before field start-up. It is highly recommended to always use genuine manufacturer s spare parts. In some parts of the world, this is even required by law when it comes specifically to SRVs. This enables everyone to keep track of the valve, which is installed under legal conditions, and will assure that the guarantee on the valve is not jeopardized. It also keeps its passport up to date, and it can be verified if set pressure or backpressures eventually change. 

Spare parts should be stored in accordance with mannfactnrer recommendations. Model nnm-bers shonld be clearly identified on spare parts. Version nnmbers for spare parts containing software or firmware shonld also be recorded so that the correct part is retrieved when required.
