For the purpose of a CVSA decal issuance, if no violation is detected during a North American Standard Level I or Level V Inspection due to a hidden part, other than pushrod stroke measurements, of the listed Critical Vehicle Inspection Items, then a CVSA decal shall be applied. However, if more than 20 percent of pushrod travel, on exposed pushrods, cannot be measured, then a CVSA decal shall not be applied. If a brake measurement was not obtained due to a hidden component, then NM shall be documented for that wheel-end brake as well as being noted on the inspection report that it was not measured due to a hidden component. Brakes not measured will be considered compliant and still included in the 20 percent calculation. An Inspector can still apply a CVSA decal even though his/her jurisdiction does not allow for the Inspection of gaseous fuel systems. [Pg.563]

Reference SOPs and applicable work instructions A BOM trust lists the part numbers, names, and required quantities for each component of the batch. The actual quantities utilized during operations must be recorded. Critical items List The purpose of the FMEA is to identify and evaluate failure modes and the possible system effects of those failures. Since the potential for undesirable effects must be eliminated or controlled, the FMEA also provides recommended actions that must be taken to accomplish this goal. As part of this analysis process, the FMEA identifies any and all items within the system that, if a failure were to occur, would have a critical effect on the operation of that system. Therefore, to facilitate evaluation and analysis of these system effects, a critical items list is developed. The list provides detailed descriptive information on each item. It will explain its overall function within the system, as well as the function of any components that may make up that item. The failure mode determined as critical is then listed along with the potential effect(s) of such a failure. If an item on the critical items list is to be accepted as is, then acceptance rationale must be provided. Such rationale may include an explanation of any existing or planned design limitations that will prevent the failure during actual system operations, or the provision of excessive factors of safety that will render such fail-ure(s) extremely improbable. Another area for evaluating acceptance is the history, or lack thereof, and any known failures of systems similar in nature and operation. [Pg.117]

Any good quality-assurance system should also assess the quality of performance in practice as well as in theory. With no currently available, effective, non-destructive test, critical areas or components may only be assessed for voids (acoustic methods are useful here) and, where possible, proof loaded. Other than this, test coupons or parts need to accompany the components themselves through the assembly process so that appropriate, systematic destructive tests may be carried out. A check-list for safety critical items is given in Table 6.1. [Pg.125]

Operating Procedures for maintenance should be in place for every system component that requires periodic calibration or/and preventative maintenance. Critical parts should be listed and should be available at the user s site. The procedure should describe what. should be done, when and what the qualifications of the engineer performing the tasks should be. System components should be labeled with the date of the last and next maintenance. All maintenance activities should be documented in the instrument s log book. Suppliers of equipment should provide a list of recommended maintenance activities and procedures (SOPs) on how to perform the maintenance. Some suppliers also offer maintenance contracts with services for preventative maintenance at scheduled time intervals. [Pg.32]
