Recommendations and Future Directions

The papers in this volume are the authors own versions of their presentations. The discussion comments were taken from a transcript of the workshop. In accordance with the policies of the CSR, the workshop did not attempt to establish any conclusions or recommendations about needs and future directions, focusing instead on issues identified by the speakers.

Preliminary work on several of these projects has already been in progress for over a year. These initial efforts will be expanded and intensified when the committee on pesticides becomes activated in the near future. However, pursuance of this program will require the support and cooperation of all segments of science and industry. Advisory bodies from the various interested groups will be called upon for recommendations and suggestions on problems which fall within their field. In turn, the assistance of this committee will be available, not only to the medical profession, but to all other groups in any direction in which the committee may be useful. 

There is a great danger in making recommendations for future work on many counts, not least because a new experimental discovery or technique may completely invalidate or supercede the more conventional and current approaches in use. Nevertheless, rather than recapitulate the discussion of previous studies, it is probably of more interest and help to make a few suggestions about which directions on research into diffusion-limited reaction rates might be more fruitful.

The goal of the accident analysis should instead be to determine how to change or reengineer the entire safety-control structure in the most cost-effective and practical way to prevent similar accident processes in the future. Once the STAMP analysis has been completed, generating recommendations is relatively simple and follows directly from the analysis results.

In the context of protecting members of the public, both now and in the future, it is also a basic principle that Protection Beyond National Borders be provided. In fulfilling this duty, a country should take account of the recommendations of international bodies such as IAEA and ICRP directly, or indirectly as in the situation where regional arrangements 2q>ply. A coimtry responsible for releases to the environment could also choose to develop more detailed arrangements for implementing this principle directly with neighbours or affected countries. 

This chapter seeks to characterize and define best practices of family involvement in expanded school mental health programs. Barriers to care and strategies for the development of a framework for integrating families into their children s care will be presented. The chapter addresses unique aspects of family involvement within a school-based mental health program, presents model examples of family involvement, and describes training issues for clinicians and for successful partnerships. Finally, we explore future directions for the field and make recommendations for next steps.
