Detergents and Lotions. The addition of PEO provides a silky feel to soHd and Hquid products. This unique lubricious property has been successfully exploited in formulation of razor strips (169) and in shampoos, detergents, and other personal-care appHcations. Sodium benzoate is also finding increasing appHcation as a corrosion inhibitor. It is incorporated into paper wrapping materials for the prevention of mst or corrosion in the production of such diverse items as razor blades, engine parts, bearings, etc. It is also used in the automotive industry as a corrosion inhibitor in engine cooling systems (at 1.5%), mainly in Europe and Japan. Unlike in its appHcation as a preservative where free benzoic acid is required to provide antimicrobial action, it appears to be the benzoate ion that provides the corrosion protection. 

Polycarbonates have proved attractive in domestic appliances. Examples include food processor bowls, coffeemaker cold water reservoirs, vacuum cleaner housings, food mixer housings, power tool housings, hair drier and electric razor housings, and microwave cookware. 

Phenolic resins are useful surface coating materials. Resols are useful for stoving lacquers for coating chemical plant, textile equipment, razor blades, brassware cuid food cans. Phenolic resins are used with poly(vinyl formal) as a flexible, tough and solvent-resistant wire enamel. Oil-soluble resins based on synthetic phenols form the basis of some gloss paints.

Quantum mechanics is part of the reductionist tradition in modem science, and the general claim, often just made implicitly as in any branch of reduction, is that the highest ideal one can aspire to is to derive everything from the theoretical principles. The less experimental data one needs to appeal to, the less one is introducing measured parameters the purer the calculation and the closer it approaches to the ideal of Ockham s razor of being as economical as possible (Hoffman, Minkin, Carpenter, 1996).2...

Even if it is assumed that the reaction is ionic, Occam s Razor would lead to the conclusion that the system is too complex and that the effort to keep it ionic is too great. It is difficult to undersand why step 8c is slow and why a simple uncharged complex would not be equally reasonable. We prefer a mechanism in which the carbon monoxide molecule is adsorbed parallel to the surface and in which the oxygen orbitals as well as the carbon orbitals of C=0 bond electrons interact with the metal. It seems reasonable that hydrogenolysis occurs exclusively only because the oxygen is held in some way while the two bonds are broken and it finally desorbs as water. A good model is consistent with physical phenomena (i.e., 01 has a physically plausible form) and reduces crresidual to experimental error using as few adjustable parameters as possible. We prepared a strip-type specimen (100 X 50 X 2 mm) from the rubber sheet of SBR filled with HAH carbon black (50 phr), vulcanized for 30 min at 155°C. On the specimen, a slit of different lengths (si = 30 mm, S2 = 20 mm, S3= 10 mm) parallel to the extension direction and a notch of different lengths (2 or 5 mm) at the center of the side surface of the specimen perpendicular to the extension direction were made by razor-cutting (see the inserted figure in Figure 18.14). The distance 8 between slits and between the slit Si and the tip of notch was 1 and 3 mm, respectively. The no-slit specimen means that it only includes a notch, without slits. 

Champ et al. [47] devised a simple abrasion experiment by measuring the abrasion loss caused by a razor blade scraping under load across a mbber surface. For this an Akron abrader sample wheel was used. They used soft unfilled noncrystallizing mbber compounds based on different polymers. Under these conditions strong abrasion pattern develop. 

Peel Strength. Samples were prepared by cutting 2.5" (63.5 mm) wide radial sections, bead to bead. The sample was then sectioned into two 1.25" (31.75 mm) radial strips, which were each cut circumferentially at the centerline of the tread resulting in four test specimens (2-SS and 2-OSS). Each sample was cut with a razor knife for a length of 1" (25.4 mm) from the skim end of the test strip, midway between the belts, to facilitate gripping the ends in the T-2000 stress-strain tester jaws. The sides of each specimen were scored midway between the belts, to a depth of 1/8" (3.175 mm) radially from the end of the gripping surface to the end of belt 2 in the shoulder area, providing a 1" wide peel section. The peel test was performed at 2"/min (50.8 mm/min) at 24°C.
