Radical polymerization addition reactions

When such comparisons are made it becomes clear that the reactivities of radicals, monomers, or transfer agents depend on the particular reaction being considered. It is not possible to conclude, for example, that polyfvinyl acetate) radical will always react x times more rapidly than polystyrene radical in addition reactions or y times as rapidly in the atom abstraction reactions involved in chain transfer. Similarly the relative order of efficiency of chain transfer agents will not be the same for all radical polymerizations. This is because resonance, sleric, and polar influences all come into play and their effects can depend on the particular species involved in a reaction. [Pg.263]

The three-step mechanism for free-radical polymerization represented by reactions (6.A)-(6.C) does not tell the whole story. Another type of free-radical reaction, called chain transfer, may also occur. This is unfortunate in the sense that it complicates the neat picture presented until now. On the other hand, this additional reaction can be turned into an asset in actual polymer practice. One of the consequences of chain transfer reactions is a lowering of the kinetic chain length and hence the molecular weight of the polymer without necessarily affecting the rate of polymerization. [Pg.388]

Chain-Growth Associative Thickeners. Preparation of hydrophobically modified, water-soluble polymer in aqueous media by a chain-growth mechanism presents a unique challenge in that the hydrophobically modified monomers are surface active and form micelles (50). Although the initiation and propagation occurs primarily in the aqueous phase, when the propagating radical enters the micelle the hydrophobically modified monomers then polymerize in blocks. In addition, the hydrophobically modified monomer possesses a different reactivity ratio (42) than the unmodified monomer, and the composition of the polymer chain therefore varies considerably with conversion (57). The most extensively studied monomer of this class has been acrylamide, but there have been others such as the modification of PVAlc. Pyridine (58) was one of the first chain-growth polymers to be hydrophobically modified. This modification is a post-polymerization alkylation reaction and produces a random distribution of hydrophobic units. [Pg.320]

Since the principal hazard of contamination of acrolein is base-catalyzed polymerization, a "buffer" solution to shortstop such a polymerization is often employed for emergency addition to a reacting tank. A typical composition of this solution is 78% acetic acid, 15% water, and 7% hydroquinone. The acetic acid is the primary active ingredient. Water is added to depress the freezing point and to increase the solubiUty of hydroquinone. Hydroquinone (HQ) prevents free-radical polymerization. Such polymerization is not expected to be a safety hazard, but there is no reason to exclude HQ from the formulation. Sodium acetate may be included as well to stop polymerization by very strong acids. There is, however, a temperature rise when it is added to acrolein due to catalysis of the acetic acid-acrolein addition reaction. [Pg.129]

Chemical Properties. Higher a-olefins are exceedingly reactive because their double bond provides the reactive site for catalytic activation as well as numerous radical and ionic reactions. These olefins also participate in additional reactions, such as oxidations, hydrogenation, double-bond isomerization, complex formation with transition-metal derivatives, polymerization, and copolymerization with other olefins in the presence of Ziegler-Natta, metallocene, and cationic catalysts. In the manufacture of highly resident flexible foams and thermoset RIM elastomers, graft or polymer polyols are used. Graft polyols are dispersions of free-radical-polymerized mixtures of acrylonitrile and styrene partially grafted to a polyol. Polymer polyols are available from BASF, Dow, and Union Carbide. In situ polyaddition reaction of isocyanates with amines in a polyol substrate produces PHD (polyhamstoff dispersion) polyols, which are marketed by Bayer (21). In addition, blending of polyether polyols with diethanolamine, followed by reaction with TDI, also affords a urethane/urea dispersion. The polymer or PHD-type polyols increase the load bearing properties and stiffness of flexible foams. Interreactive dispersion polyols are also used in RIM appHcations where elastomers of high modulus, low thermal coefficient of expansion, and improved paintabiUty are needed. [Pg.347]

The addition—reaction product of bisphenol A [80-05-07] and glycidyl methacrylate [106-91-2] is a compromise between epoxy and methacrylate resins (245). This BSI—GMA resin polymerizes through a free-radical induced covalent bonding of methacrylate rather than the epoxide reaction of epoxy resins (246). Mineral fillers coated with a silane coupling agent, which bond the powdered inorganic fillers chemically to the resin matrix, are incorporated into BSI—GMA monomer diluted with other methacrylate monomers to make it less viscous (245). Additive Polyimides. Rhc ne-Poulenc s Kin el molding compound and Kerimid impregnating resin (115), Mitsubishi s BT Resins (116), and Toshiba s Imidaloy Resin (117) are based on bismaleimide (4) technology. Maleic anhydride reacts with a diamine to produce a diimide oligomer (7). Eurther reaction with additional diamine (Michael addition) yields polyaminohismaleimide prepolymer with terminal maleic anhydride double bonds. The chemical structure of SBR is given in Fig. 4. Because butadiene has two carbon-carbon double bonds, 1,2 and 1,4 addition reactions can be produced. The 1,2 addition provides a pendant vinyl group on the copolymer chain, leading to an increase in Tg. The 1,4 addition may occur in cis or trans. In free radical emulsion polymerization, the cis to trans ratio can be varied by changing the temperature (at low temperature, the trans form is favoured), and about 20% of the vinyl pendant group remains in both isomers. The effects of increasing the concentration of initiator (i.e., increased conversion, decreased M , and broader PDi) and of reducing the reaction temperature (i.e., decreased conversion, increased M , and narrower PDi) for the polymerizations in ambient-temperature ionic liquids are the same as observed in conventional solvents. May et al. have reported similar results and in addition used NMR to investigate the stereochemistry of the PMMA produced in [BMIM][PFgj. They found that the stereochemistry was almost identical to that for PMMA produced by free radical polymerization in conventional solvents [43]. The homopolymerization and copolymerization of several other monomers were also reported. Similarly to the findings of Noda and Watanabe, the polymer was in many cases not soluble in the ionic liquid and thus phase-separated [43, 44]. [Pg.326]

Chain-growth polymers are prepared by chain-reaction polymerization of vinyl monomers in the presence of a radical, an anion, or a cation initiator.
