The first added complication when we turn to complex traits is that mapping using linkage analysis is much more difficult. Nevertheless, the mapping of so-called quantitative trait loci (QTLs) has progressed rapidly in the past decade in laboratory plants and animals in which experimental crosses are possible. This has lead to successes in mapping QTLs contributing to characteristics of tomato fruits (Paterson et al 1988), traits such as blood pressure in rodents (Hilbert et al 1991) and, more recently, emotionality in mice (Flint Corley 1996).
