Quality of communication

Some comments should also be made about the e-languages that are used for these data management instruments and the consequences of the level and quality of communication between research groups not belonging to the same laboratory or institution. 

The term plasticity has been used to emphasize the brain s responsiveness and ability to adapt to changing environmental input. The brain creates new brain cell synapses and prunes old ones in response to experience (Greenough et al., 1992 Weiler et al., 1995). Caged animals with limited opportunities for spontaneous activity will not develop as many neuronal interconnections as more free-ranging animals. It is doubtful that the brains of children would be any less responsive to the environment than those of rats. If environmental influences, such as the frequency and quality of communication, can influence brain development, chronic drug exposure should be viewed as potentially dangerous. In addition, the stimulants make children less spontaneous, reducing their interactions with the environment and hence their brain development. 

Perhaps we need to change the quality of communication between us about research in progress perhaps we need to concentrate on kinds of research and ways of doing it that have some symmetry, some equality about them. If university and industry scientists could work together in ways that yielded benefits even-handedly, the present Interface might no longer be a potential barrier. 

It is evident that the quality of communication within a project is critical. The work is a team effort. One discipline s output is another discipline s input. The information transfer has to be co-ordinated in time and co-ordinated in content (to ensure that it is appropriate and comprehensive), and there has to be an effective feedback loop to ensure that information is understood and that perceived problems and conflicts are properly handled. Outputs of one discipline often affect the work, completed or still to be done, of other disciplines, in ways not identified or planned as prime input information. (For example, consequences of instrumentation design, see Section 18.5) At management level, a balance constantly has to be struck between the often-conflicting demands of time, cost, quality, and scope for correct compromises, comprehensive information is essential. The larger the project or the more ambitious the time schedule, the greater the need for quick and appropriate communication.
