Dihydro-2f/-pyran-2-one has been prepared by reductive cycliza-tion of 5-hydroxy-2-pentynoic acid [2-Pentynoic acid, 5-hydroxy-], which is obtained in two steps from acetylene [Ethyne] and ethylene oxide [Oxirane] 3 and by the reaction of dihydropyran [277-Pyran, 3,4-dihydro-] with singlet oxygen [Oxygen, singlet].4,5 2ff-Pyran-2-one has been prepared by pyrolysis of heavy metal salts of coumalic acid [2//-Pyran-5-carboxylic acid, 2-oxo-],8 by pyrolysis of a-pyrone-6-carboxylic acid [211 - Pyran-6-carboxyl ic acid, 2-oxo-] over copper,7 and by pyrolysis of coumalic acid over copper (66-70% yield).8... [Pg.51]

At least two derivatives of pyran have been used for the primary synthesis of quinoxalines. Thus o-phenylenediamine (390) and 6-(p-methoxyphenyl)-6-methyl-5,6-dihydro-2//-pyran-2,5-dione (391) in methylene chloride at 20°C open to the air for 48 h gave 3-[2-hydroxy-2-(p-methoxyphenyl)propionyl]methyl-3,4-dihydro-... [Pg.53]

The application of RCM to dihydropyran synthesis includes a route to 2,2-disubstituted derivatives from a-hydroxycarboxylic acids. In a one-pot reaction, the hydroxy esters undergo sequential O-allylation, a Wittig rearrangement and a second O-allylation to form allyl homoallyl ethers 8. A single RCM then yields the 3,6-dihydro-2//-pyran 9. The process is readily adapted not only to variably substituted dihydropyrans but also to 2-dihydrofuranyl and 2-tetrahydrooxepinyl derivatives and to spirocycles e.g. 10 through a double RCM (Scheme 4) <00JCS(P1)2916>. [Pg.318]

Thermolysis of D-fructose in acid solution provides 11 and 2-(2-hydrox-yacetyl)furan (44) as major products. Earlier work had established the presence of 44 in the product mixtures obtained after acid-catalyzed dehydrations of D-glucose and sucrose. Eleven other products were identified in the D-fructose reaction-mixture, including formic acid, acetic acid, 2-furaldehyde, levulinic acid, 2-acetyl-3-hydroxyfuran (isomaltol), and 4-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-5-methyl-3(2//)-furanone (59). Acetic acid and formic acid can be formed by an acid-catalyzed decomposition of 2-acetyl-3-hydroxyfuran, whereas levulinic acid is a degradation prod-uct of 11. 2,3-Dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4//-pyran-4-one has also been isolated after acid treatment of D-fructose.The pyranone is a dehydration product of the pyranose form of l-deoxy-D-eo f o-2,3-hexodiulose. In aqueous acid seems to be the major reaction product of the pyranone. [Pg.286]

In 2007, another departure from carbonyl-type activation was marked by Kotke and Schreiner in the organocatalytic tetrahydropyran and 2-methoxypropene protection of alcohols, phenols, and other ROH substrates [118, 145], These derivatives offered a further synthetically useful acid-free contribution to protective group chemistry [146]. The 9-catalyzed tetrahydropyranylation with 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (DHP) as reactant and solvent was described to be applicable to a broad spectrum of hydroxy functionalities and furnished the corresponding tetrahydro-pyranyl-substituted ethers, that is, mixed acetals, at mild conditions and with good to excellent yields. Primary and secondary alcohols can be THP-protected to afford 1-8 at room temperature and at loadings ranging from 0.001 to 1.0mol% thiourea... [Pg.162]

Shaking of rac-3,4-dihydro-6-methyl-2-(l-oxopropyl)-2/f-pyran with baker s yeast resulted in initial formation of racemic 6-hydroxy-2,7-nonanedione and then by kinetic resolution/ diastereoselective reduction in the production of (67 ,7S)-6,7-dihydroxy-2-nonanone (2) where both relative and absolute configuration had to be determined (see p 470)134. [Pg.420]

Dehydration procedures have led to 2//-thiopyrans. Thus unsubstituted parent heterocycle 6 was prepared by the dehydration of hydroxy derivative 287 with potassium hydrogen sulfate.20 The same procedure applied to a mixture of isomeric hydroxy 2-methyl-5,6-dihydro-2//-thiopyrans and 3,5-dihydroxy-2,4,5,6-tetrahydrothiopyran gives all the corresponding thio-pyrans.91 3-Phenylthiopyran dioxide 289 was obtained after the dehydration of hydroxy derivative 288a with phosphoric acid at elevated temperatures.300,301 The same approach was explored for the preparation of furano-2//-thiopyran 14.42... [Pg.215]
