Production and Shipment. Estimated adiponitrile production capacities in the U.S. in 1992 were about 625 thousand metric tons and worldwide capacity was in excess of lO metric tons. The DOT/IMO classification for adiponitrile is class 6.1 hazard, UN No. 2205. It requires a POISON label on all containers and is in packing group III. Approved materials of constmction for shipping, storage, and associated transportation equipment are carbon steel and type 316 stainless steel. Either centrifugal or positive displacement pumps may be used. Carbon dioxide or chemical-foam fire extinguishers should be used. There are no specifications for commercial adiponitrile. The typical composition is 99.5 wt % adiponitrile. Impurities that may be present depend on the method of manufacture, and thus, vary depending on the source. [Pg.221]

The light source for excitation of Nd YAG lasers may be a pulsed flashlamp for pulsed operation, a continuous-arc lamp for continuous operation, or a semiconductor laser diode, for either pulsed or continuous operation. The use of semiconductor laser diodes as the pump source for sohd-state lasers became common in the early 1990s. A variety of commercial diode-pumped lasers are available. One possible configuration is shown in Figure 8. The output of the diode is adjusted by composition and temperature to be near 810 nm, ie, near the peak of the neodymium absorption. The diode lasers are themselves relatively efficient and the output is absorbed better by the Nd YAG than the light from flashlamps or arc lamps. Thus diode-pumped sohd-state lasers have much higher efficiency than conventionally pumped devices. Correspondingly, there is less heat to remove. Thus diode-pumped sohd-state lasers represent a laser class that is much more compact and efficient than eadier devices. [Pg.8]

The second class of grinding equipment is used to prepare dispersions. Typical of this class are baU and pebble mills, ultrasonic mills, and attrition mills. SoHds, eg, sulfur, antioxidants, accelerators, and zinc oxide, are generaUy ground on this equipment (see Size reduction). BaU mill action is assisted in some mills by a combination of dispersion circulation by an external pump and mechanical osciUation of an otherwise fixed nonrotary mill chamber. Where baU mill chambers are rotated it is necessary to experimentally estabHsh an optimum speed of rotation, the size and weight of the baU charge, and ensure the mills do not overheat during the grinding period. [Pg.257]

Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors. Because of the complexity of the biochemical processes involved in cardiac muscle contraction, investigators have looked at these pathways for other means of dmg intervention for CHF. One of the areas of investigation involves increased cycHc adenosine monophosphate [60-92-4] (cAMP) through inhibition of phosphodiesterase [9025-82-5] (PDE). This class of compounds includes amrinone, considered beneficial for CHF because of positive inotropic and vasodilator activity. The mechanism of inotropic action involves the inhibition of PDE, which in turn inhibits the intracellular hydrolysis of cAMP (130). In cascade fashion, cAMP-catalyzed phosphorylation of sarcolemmal calcium-channels follows, activating the calcium pump (131). A series of synthetic moieties including the bipyridines, amrinone and milrinone, piroximone and enoximone, [77671-31-9], C22H22N2O2S, all of which have been shown to improve cardiac contractiUty in short-term studies, were developed (132,133). These dmgs... [Pg.129]

Base equipment includes all equipment within the battery limits whose cost is as significant as the cost of a pump. For example, storage tanks, knockout drums, accumulators, heat exchangers, and pumps are classed as main-plant items (MPl). Early in the development of the process-flow diagram, it is advisable to increase the estimated (MPl) cost by 10 to 20 percent to allow for later additions. When the scope of the process has been well defined, (MPl) costs should be increased by 1 to 10 percent. [Pg.866]

Reciprocating Pumps There are three classes of reciprocating pumps piston pumps, plunger pumps, and diaphragm pumps. [Pg.910]

Jet pumps are a class of liquid-handling device that makes use of the momentum of one fluid to move another. [Pg.913]

The above covers most conventional mixers there is another class of mixers, called pump-mix impellers, where the impeller serves not only to mix the fluids, but also to move the fluids through the extraction stages. These are speciahzed designs, often used in the metals extraction industries. For these types of impellers, a knowledge of the power characteristics for pumping is required in addition to that for mixing. For a more detailed treatment of these special cases, the reader is referred to Lo et al. [Pg.1469]

In this group, the impeller or impellers are mounted on the extreme end of the shaft in a cantilevered condition hanging from the support bearings. This group of pumps is also subdivided into a class known as motor-pumps or close-coupled pumps where the impeller is directly mounted onto the motor shaft and supported by the motor s bearings. [Pg.57]
