A Class 5 installation follows the Class 4 concept, but is characterized by having pumps operating with identical spares and have one or more pumps operating in plant bays where product storage gives time to assess the problem and to take action to get the pump back on-line. [Pg.516]

In order for an organelle lumen or an extracellular space (e.g., the lumen of the stomach) to become acidic, movement of protons must be accompanied either by (1) movement of an equal number of anions (e.g.. Cl ) in the same direction or by (2) movement of equal numbers of a different cation in the opposite direction. The first process occurs in lysosomes and plant vacuoles whose membranes contain V-class H ATPases and anion channels through which accompanying Cl ions move (Figure 7-10b). The second process occurs in the lining of the stomach, which contains a P-class H /K ATPase that is not electrogenic and pumps one H outward and one inward. In KCl, the N2 band overlaps the 1.06-/xm line of the Nd YAG laser, which forms a convenierrt pump for the center. The emission, shown in Fig. 11, sparts from 1.1-1.5 /xm. Lasing in a pulsed mode has been obtained from this center over the 1.23-1.35-)txm range. The laser only operates in a pulsed mode however. The pirlsed operation is probably (but not yet conclusively) due to multiplet formation of the electrons in the excited state. Urrlike all the other lasers described in this article, the N-cerrter has more than one electron, which leads to possible triplet or multiplet formation upon relaxation. Such mrrltiplet formation could lead to deleterious absorptions in the lasing region, and to a general depletion of laser-active centers. Nonetheless, the N-center laser represents the first of a new class of aggregate center lasers that may open the door to new systems and applications in the future. [Pg.56]
