After several years of operation, conditions warranted the replacement of a pump bowl. The plant warehouse did not stock spare ductile iron pump bowls and none were accessible. A resourceful maintenance supervisor realized that there were a few other large pumps within the plant and they located one. Unfortunately, they chose a cast iron pump bowl which is very desirable for certain sodium chloride (table salt) brine services, but it is totally unsuited for large volumes of highly flammable materials. [Pg.186]

Cast iron is undesirable (and prohibited by certain flammable liquid codes) because a brittle fracture can lead to a massive leak. Some months after this mistake, the unit received a loss prevention audit and as a result the pump bowls were replaced with ductile iron units. This same audit prompted the installation of remotely operated emergency shut-off valves around these pumps. [Pg.186]

A small (25-kg), portable apheresis system, available in 1993, is designed to meet a wide variety of blood cell separation needs. The role of the apheresis system is to control the behavior, separation, and collection of blood components from the bowl while maintaining maximum donor safety. The system controls the flow rates of blood and components through variable pump speeds. It directs the flow of components out of the bowl, by fully automatic opening and closing of valves based on the output of the system sensors. The system monitors the separation of blood components in the bowl by an optics system that aims at the shoulder of the bowl. A sensor on the effluent line monitors the flow of components out of the bowl. [Pg.523]

The ease with which the separated products leave the bowl determines the richness of the fat. Fluid whole milk enters the separator under pressure from a positive displacement pump or centrifugal pump with flow control (Fig. 1). The fat (cream) is separated and moves toward the center of the bowl, while the skimmed milk passes to the outer space. There are two spouts or oudets, one for cream and one for skimmed milk. Cream leaves the center of the bowl with the percentage of fat ( 30 40%) controlled by the adjustment of a valve, called a cream or skim milk screw, that controls the flow of the product leaving the field of centrifugal force and thus affects the separation. [Pg.353]

Debris particles that are heavier than water migrate to the outer wall area and slither down into a collection bowl that is periodically blown down. Very little water is lost. Typical performance is 97.8% of solids with specific gravity exceeding 1.2 down to 45 microns. Side stream filtration is more common in cooling tower applications. The scheme uses a small dedicated pump to draw dirty water from the sump, direct it through a filtration device and sent it back to the basin. [Pg.88]

Figure 10 shows the face of the anode. As indicated, there are doubtless some droplets of electrolyte moving in the channels. The fluorine moves these droplets along just like a gas lift pump lifts water in a goldfish bowl cleaner or a swimming pool vacuum. The electrolyte still does not wet the anode very well, but the low-energy situation makes it easier to move electrons from the electrolyte into the carbon base. [Pg.532]

Submersible turbine pumps are a variety of vertical turbine pumps with the motor attached below the pumping unit. Water passes in through an intake port located between the motor and bowl assembly, then upward through the bowl stages to the surface through the pump pipe. Electric power is supplied to the motor by specially insulated wires. Submersible turbine pumps are manufactured for water supply and oil well usage by a wide variety of manufactures in sizes ranging from /3 to several hundred horsepower, and are constructed of materials suited for many chemicals. [Pg.225]
