Pug mill

The blended charge is conditioned in a rotating pug mill where water is added to bring the moisture content between 6 and 8%. The feed is then peUeti2ed (0.5 cm in si2e) in a disk or dmm peUeti2er. 

Addition of NaCl decreases the solubiHty of Ca(OCl)2 in equiHbrium with the dibasic salt and lime. The dibasic slurry is sent to a classifier. Finely suspended lime impurities are removed from the overheads yielding a clear Hquor, which is recycled to the lime slurry makeup. The bottoms from the classifier are chlorinated giving a slurry of Ca(OCl)2 2H20, which is centrifuged. The cake is mixed with strong, low salt NaOCl solution in a pug mill and... 

In the wet process, the clay is masticated in a pug mill to break up lumps and then dispersed with a dispersing aid and water to make a 40 percent solids slip of low viscosity. A hi -speed agitator such as a Cowles dissolver is used for this purpose. Sands are settled out, and then the clay is classified into two size fractious in either a Hydrosettler or a continuous Sharpies or Bird centrifuge. The fine fraction, with sizes of less than 1 [Lm, is used as a pigment and for paper coating, while the coarser fraction is used as a paper filler. 

Deairing pug-mill extruders which combine mixing, densification, and extrusion in one operation are available for agglomerating clays, catalysts, fertihzers, etc. Table 20-55 gives data on screw extruders for the production of catalyst pellets.

For effective volatilization using an enclosed mechanical aeration system, contaminated soil is mixed in a pug mill or rotary drum. The gasoline components are released from the soil matrix by the churning action of the air/soil contact. The induced airflow within the chamber captures the gasoline emissions and passes them through an air pollution control device (e.g., a water scrubber or vapor-phase carbon adsorption system) before they are discharged through a properly sized stack.

The innovative features of the system include proprietary reagents, the pug mill designed by Chemfix, and the continuous nature of the process. Because it is a continuous process, waste material can be treated more quickly, thus lowering the cost per ton of material treated. 

Terrafix units are trailer-mounted, fully transportable units that can be operational within hours after arrival at the site. The units are designed to screen out large material such as rocks and metal parts as well as remove ferrous material using magnetic separation. The remaining material is then mixed in a pug mill with cementitious materials (i.e., cement, fly ash, pozzilime) and/or silicates to produce a material in which the heavy metals are chemically fixed. 

The use of phosphate has been widely evaluated and subjected to field trials for Pb-contaminated soils. Most treatment systems involve excavation, pug milling of the soil with the stabilization agent, and either replacement or landfill disposal. Occasionally, for larger sites and deeper contamination, in situ mixing with large augers is used.

Dehalogenation occurs by either the replacement of halogen molecules or the destruction of the contaminant. Soil and sediment that are contaminated with chlorinated organic compounds, especially PCBs, dioxins, and furans, can be remediated through dehalogenation. The contaminated soil is screened, processed with a crusher and pug mill, and mixed with sodium bicarbonate. The mixture is heated to above 330°C (630°F) in a reactor to partially decompose and volatilize the contaminants. The volatilized contaminants are captured, condensed, and treated separately.

One universal type of concentrate was manufactured in Pug Mills of the type typically used to mix clay in the pottery industry. No one manufacturing method works for all polymers and generally the more versatile the process the less optimized it is for any one product.
