Consumer concerns about food quality are continually changing. There is an urgent need to understand better the psychological and social processes that shape the demands and preferences for food and to incorporate present and future knowledge of this topic into targeted development of foods and food production systems that fulfil the expectations of different groups of consumers.

And he goes onto say that several of the furnaces and retorts used by the alchemists had undeniable sexual shapes (Bachelard 51). 

Locus of control, a familiar paradigm in psychology, has been usefully adopted by O Brien and Permutter (1997) and Sprenger and Josephson (1998) to describe that particular point, or locus, in the mind of the child and the family, from which emanates the power to alleviate symptoms. External and internal forces combine to shape the final location, but the clinician is wise to remember that this is a dynamic, organic concept that evolves over the growth of the alliance. 

In Chapter 4 we discussed how Ayahuasca users often felt that they were freed from time. Past, present, and future lose their significance. In Chapter 2 we discussed how certain languages may shape or reflect different cultures notions of time. Your psychological perception of time is, of course, affected by such things as medications, time of day, your level of happiness, external stimuli, and even the temperature. Hypnosis can also cause time dilation, as can cannabis and LSD. Additionally, heat appears to speed up the activity of a chemical timepiece in the brain. For example, fever can severely speed your perception of time, perhaps partly because it speeds chemical processes. Opium is notorious for its effect on time perception. Pharmacology and psychology are thus in a three-way interaction with physiology that determines the form of conscious experience. That form shapes and constrains its content. And much of this process appears to be due to chance. If positive emotions predominate, my dream or LSD trip will be psychedelic and possibly even ecstatic. If negative emotions prevail, my dream will be more or less nightmarish and my LSD trip more or less monstrous. 

The first two parts of this book explain how scientists now understand normal alterations of consciousness in brain chemical terms. In part I, The Scope and Shape of Conscious States, I define the psychological components and dimensions of conscious experience. Chapter 1 shows how subjective experience can be conceptualized and measured in relation to brain science. It also introduces the notion of a unified brain-mind. Chapter 2 emphasizes the strategy of studying both spontaneous and experimental alterations in conscious state. Chapter 3 contrasts waking and dreaming by illustrating the way that we can measure these dramatic spontaneous changes in conscious state. 

Psychological structures have individual characteristics that limit and shape the ways in which they can interact with one another. Thus the possibilities of any system built of psychological structures are shaped and limited both by the deployment of attention/awareness and other energies and by the characteristics of the structures comprising the system. The human biocomputer, in other words, has a large but limited number of possible modes of functioning.
