Travel career pattern (TCP) Conceptually modified TCL with more emphasis on the change of motivation patterns reflecting career levels than on the hierarchical levels. [Pg.58]

For both phases of the present study, the outcomes point to several common and notable findings. Firstly, the results from both phases of this first study indicated that the motivational dimensions of escape/relax, novelty, relationship, and self-development within the new travel career pattern approach are the most important travel motivation factors. A number of studies have endorsed and reinforced these kind of results. For example, the novelty-seeking motive has received considerable attention in tourism research since it was introduced into the tourism literature by Cohen (1972). It is one of the main forces behind all travel behaviour and has been explored in a number of empirical studies (Bello Etzel, 1985 Cohen, 1972 Crompton, 1979 Dann, 1977,1981). While novelty-seeking is a need to pursue stimulation, escape-seeking has been understood as a need to get away from over-stimulation (Iso-Ahola, 1982). Mannell and Iso-Ahola (1987) theorised that escape from routine responsibilities and stress... [Pg.68]

From this first study several achievements can be noted. An extensive list of travel motivation items, which provided a broad coverage of possible motives of travel, was employed. Motivation factors were effectively and clearly identified. Many of the motives were shown to be influenced by the levels of travel experience. Furthermore, the identification of four important motivation factors that persisted through two contrasting levels of experience led to the theoretical possibility that there is a mainframe or backbone in the travel career patterns. [Pg.70]

This study was conducted to meet three aims to empirically assess and further develop the conceptual ideas of the travel career pattern approach, to further explicate the concept of travel career and establish methods for its measurement and finally, to investigate the cross-cultural applicability of a travel career pattern conceptual scheme through the use of a Korean sample. [Pg.80]

Importantly, the findings from both the first and second study imply that the travel career patterns approach can be conceptually illustrated as three layers of travel motivation, where each layer consists of different travel motives (Figure 3.1). [Pg.82]

A consideration of the traveller motivation, life-cycle and demographic links manifested in the self-drive transport choices can be developed in a similar way for the domestic, no children travellers. This group places a relatively greater importance on outstanding scenery and warm sunny weather, interesting small towns and villages, opportunities to visit family/friends and friendly local people. These results are consistent with the core-motives emphasis of the travel career pattern approach but in this context the motives find expression in activities. [Pg.88]
