Provisional names

Mendeleev s real insight was revealed in his 1871 paper in connection with vacant spaces in the periodic table. He gave the provisional names eka-aluminium, eka-boron and eka-silicon [to the elements he expected to fill these gaps], (Ihde, 1964, p. 283)... [Pg.50]

The basic materials of systematic chemical nomenclature are the element names and symbols, which are, of themselves, trivial, with the exception of the systematic, provisional names and symbols for the elements of atomic number greater than 109. These provisional names will be superseded eventually by trivial names and symbols. In any case, they make little impact on general chemical practice. [Pg.9]

This is a complex process, involving the deazaflavin-reducing hydrog-enase and other proteins, provisionally named factors A-2. A-3, and C (19). The system requires initial activation by ATP before the reaction can proceed (87). Component C consists of two each of three protein subunits of 68,45, and 38.5 kDa and contains two molecules of F430 per molecule, as well as stoichiometric amounts of coenzyme M (91). F430 appears to be tightly but noncovalently bound to the enzyme. [Pg.325]

Cluster II This includes mostly sites located on the main tributaries (398, 399, and 403) of the Struma River and has therefore been provisionally named the tributary pattern. Here, the concentrations of chlorides, nitrates, calcium, and ammonium are low, and site... [Pg.375]

The table shown here, taken from a book published in 1998, goes as far as the element provisionally named Ununibiium (1-1-2-ium, since its atomic number is 112), created by an international team led by Peter Armbruster in 1996. It had to be created rather than discovered, because all ele-... [Pg.186]

In 1994 N. Deka et al. detected virus-like particles of 27-37 nm in size in specimens of stools from French patients with virus hepatitis NANB. The authors provisionally named the infectious agent hepatitis French virus or HEV (509) The patients tested seronegative for other hepatitis viruses, and no HAV or HEV was detectable in the stool specimens. Following i.v. application of such particles in rhesus monkeys, the hepatitis virus was produced and could be identified in the liver cells and stools of these primates. The genetic material was characterized as a double-stranded DNA of 20 kilobases in length. It was possible to reproduce the pathogens in... [Pg.449]

In the year 2000, Italian scientists discovered a new virus isolated from an HIV-infected drug user. It was provisionally named SEN virus or SENV after the initials of the source patient, who showed elevated transaminases of unknown aetiology (D. Primi et at.). [Pg.451]

He also gave these elements provisional names, such as Ekaaluminum (the prefix eka- means one beyond ) for the element that would come below aluminum. These elements were eventually discovered. As Table i illustrates, their properties were close to Mendeleev s predictions. Although other chemists, such as Newlands, had created tables of the elements, Mendeleev was the first to use the table to predict the existence of undiscovered elements. Because Mendeleev s predictions proved true, most chemists accepted his periodic table of the elements. [Pg.136]

Some authors faced with experimental data from functional studies that did not fulfilled the criteria of definition of Ii- or l2-receptors this was particularly the case in investigations concerning the possible role of pancreatic imidazoline receptors but it was also evoked with regard to sympathetic presynaptic imidazohne receptors. Such sites were provisionally named non-Il, non-l2 receptors [24,25]. [Pg.352]

In relation to Distylium factors research in Distylium racemosum leaves, Prof. Munakata has further studied the provisionally named " Corn factor " from corn germ oil 4). He has examined many plant oils in an effort to obtain a better source of novel plant growth regulators, including coconut oil, corn germ oil, cotton seed oil, linseed oil, olive oil, peanut oil, poppy oil, rape oil, sesame oil, soya oil, and turpentine oil, and found that corn germ oil showed a most remarkable activity in the LJT. Based... [Pg.24]

The minor alkaloid of this plant, provisionally named aegelenine, was shown to be identical with halfordinal previously obtained from Halfordia sderoxyla F. Muell. (3). [Pg.508]

Further investigation of the B. antidysenterica extract [7] led to two new isobrucein type quassinoids, which were provisionally named bruceanol-A (11) and -B (12). Both were amorphous solids. Bruceanol-A (11) eluted after isobrucein-B (5) on preparative HPLC and bruceanol-B... [Pg.287]
