BODIPY 530/550 C3-SE is 4,4-difluoro-5,7-diphenyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-S-indacene-3-propionic add, sucdnimidyl ester (Molecular Probes). The compound is an analog of BODIPY 530/550 C3, which contains an active NHS ester on its propionic acid side chain (Chapter 2, Section 1.4). The ester reacts with primary amines and other nucleophiles to form stable amide bonds. 

The reaction of succinic acid anhydride 111 with 2-methyl-2,4-diphenyl-2,3-dihydroli/-benzo[Z ][l,4]diazepine 112 in toluene in the presence of potassium carbonate leads to 4-(2-methyl-2,4-diphenyl-2,5-dihydro-l/f-l,5-benzodiazepin-5-yl)-4-oxobutanoic acid 113 in 70% yield [110], while its treatment with 2,4-diphenyl-2,3-dihydro-l//-l,5-benzodiazepine 104 follows with chalcone elimination and yields 3-(benzimidazol-2-yl)propionic acid 114 [115] (Scheme 4.36).

An interesting use was made of solubility analysis in a stability study of propoxyphene hydrochloride13. In this study, propoxyphene hydrochloride was stored at 80°C, 105°C, and 130°C. Both the solubility analysis and the alternate IR assay showed the thermal stability of propoxyphene hydrochloride. Gas chromatography can be used to measure the slow hydrolysis of propoxyphene hydrochloride in aqueous solutions. The hydrolytic products are propionic acid and (+)-a-4-(Dimethylamino)-3-methy1-1,2-diphenyl-2-butanol. With suitable gas chromatographic conditions either product can be quantitated. A chloroform extraction of an alkaline solution of propoxyphene hydrochloride (where degradation has occurred) can be assayed using the previously described IR method.

As in the examples described earlier, the alkenylations are usually performed in acidic solvents such as acetic and propionic acids, which limits coexisting functional groups in substrates. In contrast, the authors developed a reaction system, Pd(OAc)2/Cu(OAc)2/LiOAc/dimethylformamide (DMF), which is applicable to the reaction of thiophenes and furans possessing acid-sensitive substituents [42]. For example, the diphenyl(hydroxy)methyl function in diphenyl(2-thienyl)methanol is tolerable under the weakly basic conditions, as shown in Scheme 18.41. The function can be subsequently substituted by Pd-catalyzed arylation with aryl bromides via C-C bond cleavage to produce the corresponding 2-alkenyl-5-arylthiophenes.
