Properties of Functionals

We need three important properties for functionals — continuity, linearity, and homogeneity. These properties are required to develop the concept of the [Pg.27]

A linear functional I over a specified domain satisfies the relation I ay + j3z) = al y) + I z) [Pg.27]

Note that a linear functional is inherently homogeneous but a homogeneous functional is not necessarily linear. The following example illustrates this important point. [Pg.27]

This review account will summarize latest research results on the design, development and properties of functionalized primary phosphines. In particular, the focus would be centered around recent results from our laboratory on the chemical architecture of heteroatom functionahzed primary bisphosphines. We wiU also discuss synthetic protocols for the formylation reactions of functionalized primary phosphines to produce structurally diverse water-soluble hydroxymethyl phosphines. Finally, we will discuss the utility of carboxylate functionahzed primary bisphosphines for incorporation on to peptides and their potential apphcations in catalysis and biomedicine. [Pg.123]

Because of this a study of mathematical properties of function U led to understanding geometrical and mechanical features of level surfaces. Also, with a help of potential it was proved that external surface of earth with an accuracy of flattening of the first order has to be spheroid. The next step in developing the theory of the... [Pg.156]

In this chaper, the two principal methods for their synthesis and some of the main applications of functional fluoropolymers will be reviewed. However, as there are many patents and papers as well as several reviews on these subjects, the review will be brief and the primary focus will be on selected applications and specific properties of functional fluoropolymers that can be achieved in highly ordered Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of these polymers. [Pg.92]

Mechanical Properties of Functionalized Alkanethiol Self-Assembled Monolayers. [Pg.124]

It is the study of differential equations of this kind which leads to the special functions of mathematical physics. The adjective special is used in this connection because here we arc not, as in analysis, concerned with the general properties of functions, but only with the properties of functions which arise in the solution of special problems. [Pg.3]

In the past three decades, ti-conjugated (semi)conducting polymers have attracted significant interest, since these materials may combine the ease of processibility and outstanding mechanical properties of polymers with the exceptional, readily tailored electronic and optical properties of functional organic molecules [1,2]. Especially the potential use of these synthetic metals ... [Pg.210]

Several of the unusual chemical properties of functional groups on metal acetylacetonate rings may be explained in terms of the considerable steric hindrance afforded the central carbon of the chelate ring by the flanking methyl groups. To examine this hypothesis the preparation of chelates of formyl acetone (XXXVIII) and malonaldehyde (XXXIX) was undertaken. [Pg.94]

While the number of possible conformers of a macromolecule is practically unlimited, it is a common observation that macromolecules in biological systems occupy only an extremely limited portion of the conformational hyperspace open to them. As a result, they exhibit well-defined shapes which confer upon them the emergent property of functionality (see Section 2.3.3). [Pg.20]

Both synthesis and properties of functionalized pentacene and anthra-dithiophene 447 were reported (05JA4986 06MI3708). Anthradithiophenes functionalized on the thiophene ring were reported to yield good hole mobility from vapor-deposited films (on order of 0.1 cm2 V [ s [). Acenedithiophenes with absorption at 653 nm have been reported (04OL3325). Tetrathiophene anthracene derivatives have been described showing absorption at 431 nm and emission at 437 nm (07OL4187). [Pg.270]

As we have seen from our previous discussions of heat capacities, thermal expansion coefficients, and compressibilities, partial derivatives are the key to discussing changes in thermodynamic systems. In a single-component system of fixed size, the specification of two state variables completely determines the state of the system. Calling one of the molar energy quantities Z, we can write Z = Z(X, Y), where Xand Tare any two state variables, such as Tand I] or Tand V. Using the general mathematical properties of functions of two variables that are discussed in Appendix A,... [Pg.114]
