An extension of the concept of blended cements is cements/blends that consist solely of mineral additions without the presence of Portland cement or Portland clinker. The hydraulic properties of such systems tend to be poor, and heat curing may be required in some of them to attain measurable strengths in a reasonable time. [Pg.103]

Blends of two or more binders may yield products whose chemistry of hydration and cementing characteristics may or may not differ significantly from those of pure cements constituting the blend. The properties of the new binder will depend both on the quality of the original binders being blended together, and on their mutual ratio in the blend. Different cements should not be mixed with one another, certainly not on the construction site, as the facilities for uniform blending are not available there. Spent foundry sand is thought of as a beneficial substitute for fine sand for use in portland cement concrete. Prior to acceptance of inclusion, test standards applied on conventional fine sand shall be referred to as the standards for spent foundry sand to compare the physical properties of conventional sand and spent foundry sand. The most important parameters are particle size distribution, fineness modulus, dust content, density, organics content, deleterious materials content, and grain shape. Although no spent foundry sand satisfies all of the specifications, foundry sand can be blended with conventional sand to be incorporated into the concrete matrix. The essential step is the efficient grinding and blending of raw materials. The final properties of cement strongly depend on its mineral composition so that raw composition and firing conditions are adjusted, depending on the type of cement to be produced.
