Another attractive commercial route to MEK is via direct oxidation of / -butenes (34—39) in a reaction analogous to the Wacker-Hoechst process for acetaldehyde production via ethylene oxidation. In the Wacker-Hoechst process the oxidation of olefins is conducted in an aqueous solution containing palladium and copper chlorides. However, unlike acetaldehyde production, / -butene oxidation has not proved commercially successflil because chlorinated butanones and butyraldehyde by-products form which both reduce yields and compHcate product purification, and also because titanium-lined equipment is required to withstand chloride corrosion. [Pg.489]

The design of production plants for the manufacture of the three categories of product varies considerably. Fine chemicals are usually produced in batch reactors, which may also be used for the production of a variety of similar products. Fine chemicals usually have demanding product quality specifications and, consequently, a significant fraction of the production costs are involved in product purification and testing. Intermediate volume chemicals have less rigorous quality specifications than fine chemicals and are usually manufactured in product-specific-plants, either as batch or continuous flow processes. Bulk chemical production plants usually operate continuous flow processes... [Pg.18]

Crystallisation is used for the production, purification and recovery of solids. Crystalline products have an attractive appearance, are free flowing, and easily handled and packaged. The process is used in a wide range of industries from the small-scale production of specialised chemicals, such as pharmaceutical products, to the tonnage production of products such as sugar, common salt and fertilisers. [Pg.437]

Defining hydrogen fuel quality specifications is a high priority for the Roadmap. Such specifications must be quantified at the vehicle-station interface and must consider how the presence of small amounts of contaminants affects the performance and durability of fuel cell and balance of plant material compatibility of onboard and stationary hydrogen storage systems and the operation and maintenance of hydrogen production, purification, and delivery systems. Most importantly, fuel quality specification must consider... [Pg.485]

These polystyrene-based catalysts are effective for the cyanide displacements of 1-bromooctane and 1-chlorooctane, and also for the generation of dichlorocarbene from chloroform and aqueous sodium hydroxide, giving quantitative yields of (2,2-dichlorocyclopropyl)benzene from styrene. The catalysts may be recovered simply by filtering the reaction mixture. Unfunctionalized polystyrene does not catalyse these reactions. As well as improving product purification and catalyst recovery, this approach also avoids... [Pg.124]

Another notable element of the cost increases is the inclusion in the Shaw flow sheets of subsystems for hydrogen product purification and for feed water purification. For S-I and to a lesser extent for HyS, concern with the carry-over of sulphur to the product necessitated a significantly costly purification subsystem on the product end of the cycle. For HTSE, the issue is uncertainty in the purity of input steam and effects on the electrolysis cells, and so a large feedwater purification subsystem impacts the overall capital cost. In the earlier evaluations these subsystems were not considered significant enough to include. [Pg.339]

As for the Bolm procedure, simple extraction enables essentially quantitative product purification and catalyst recovery without chromatography, and the recovered catalyst can be reused without any deterioration in its efficiency. The sense of enantioselectivity in these processes can be predicted with the aid of a mnemonic (Fig. 8.8). [Pg.316]

Extraction is a method used to separate the desired product from impurities. This process is used in product purification and results from an unequal distribution of solute between two immiscible solvents. This process, then, makes use of differences is solubilities to separate components in what is called a work-up. [Pg.53]

The absence of the by-products enables the expenses on the product purification and consequently its net cost to be reduced. [Pg.210]

In this section, the development of a few of the currently approved protein drugs is examined with emphasis on the choice of expression system, method of purification, and other factors that have had an influence on their commercialization. At least one drug produced through each of the expression systems is considered to illustrate the rationale for the choice and the influence of this choice on production, purification, and regulatory aspects. [Pg.94]
