Uridine 3 ,5 -diphosphate

Figure 25.7 Glycoprotein formation occurs by initial phosphorylation of the starting carbohydrate to a glycosyl phosphate, followed by reaction with UTP to form a glycosyl uridine 5 -diphosphate. Nucleophilic substitution by an -OH (or -NH2) group on a protein then gives the glycoprotein. Handschuh and Orgel (1973) studied the mineral struvite. It can be precipitated from ocean water in the presence of phosphate if the concentration of NH ions in the water is greater than 0.01 M. If struvite is heated with urea, magnesium pyrophosphate is obtained in a yield of about 20% after 10 days at 338 K if nucleosides are added to the reaction mixture described above, nucleoside diphosphates such as uridine-5 -diphosphate and diuridine-5 -diphosphate are formed in good yields. [Pg.117]

The sugar nucleotides (an uninformative name that has been used for glycosyl nucleotides, or more strictly, glycosyl esters of nucleoside di- or mono-phosphates) were discussed in this Series12 in 1973. Since then, accumulation of new data about these derivatives has continued, and now, about 35 representatives of this class are known to participate in the biosynthesis of polysaccharide chains of bacterial polymers (for a survey, see Ref. 13). These include glycosyl esters of uridine 5 -diphosphate (UDP), thymidine 5 -diphosphate (dTDP), guanosine 5 -diphosphate (GDP), cytidine 5 -diphosphate (CDP), cytidine 5 -monophosphate (CMP), and adenosine 5 -diphosphate (ADP). [Pg.280]
