The goal of the prioritization scheme is to design the scores so that the overall worst looking compounds are de-emphasized and the best looking compounds are moved toward the top of the list. Thus, it is important to ensure that the best and the worst compounds are clearly separated and that the vast bulk of the population is in the middle. Another approach to prioritization is to employ the Pareto principle. Commonly known as the 80/20 rule, this principle was first discussed by Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto in the nineteenth century when studying the distribution of wealth in a number of countries. He observed that about 80 percent of the wealth in most countries was controlled by a consistent minority—about 20 percent of the people.2 This principle suggests that we should focus on those few tasks which produce the most significant results (Petersen and Halstead, 1983).
