By attempting to maintain process conditions at or near their design values, the process controls so attempt to prevent abnormal conditions from developing within the process. Although process controls can be viewed as a protective layer, this is really a by-product and not the primaiy func tion. Where the objective of a function is specifically to reduce risk, the implementation is normally not within the process controls. Instead, the implementation is within a separate system specifically provided to reduce risk. This system is generally referred to as the safety interlock system. 

Liquid-liquid fractionation, or fractional extraction (Fig. 15-6), is a sophisticated scheme for nearly complete separation of one solute from a second solute by liquid-liquid extraclion. Two immiscible liquids travel countercurrently through a contaclor, with the solutes being fed near the center of the contactor. The ratio of immiscible-liquid flow rates is operated so that one of the phases preferentially moves the first solute to one end of the contactor and the other phase moves the second solute to the opposite end of the contactor. Another way to describe the operation is that a primaiy solvent S preferentially extracts, or strips, the first solute from the feed F and a wash solvent...

XII. Tricyclic Systems Containing a Cyclobxttane Ring The only system of this kind which appears to have been investigated kinetically in detail is tricyclo[3,3,0,0 ]octane (Srinivasan and Levi, 1964). At temperatures in the range 327 to 366° C the isomerization is a homogeneous first-order reaction. The observed products were 4-vinyl-cyclohexene, butadiene and 1,5-cyclo-octadiene. However, from separate studies on the cyclo-octadiene, it is concluded that the tricyclo-octane first isomerizes to the cyclo-octadiene which then undergoes secondary reactions to yield the other observed products. The observed rate is then the rate of this primaiy reaction, viz. ...

The layout of a typical air handling system serving an aseptic Ailing room or clean room is depicted in Fig. 2. A primaiy bank of HEPA Alters is usually situated in a plant room physically separated but not remote from the aseptic manufacturing facility. 

Despile the basic nature of its function in most FI systems, users of peristaltic pumps often do not operate them properly, including people who have used them for years. Since its proper usage is of primaiy importance, particularly in many on-line separation sy.stems where flow impedances are often significantly higher than normal FIA systems, it ma be necessary to stress the important points here, and provide some useful hints for their correct manipulation. 

For applications involving electricity generation, the steam generators deliver superheated steam to the turbines, eliminating the need for steam drams, driers and steam separator equipment. Since the secondary pressure is less than the primaiy pressure, the steam generator tubes will operate under compression, which provides added resistance to stress-induced corrosion cracking. 

Differential scanning calorimetry is not sensitive enough to allow e primaiy reaction to be separated from the secondary reaction in a quantitative manner, such as was the case for the 2.00 stoichiometry. A more species sensitive technique, such as NMR or FTIR, is necessary to discern the individual extents and rates of reaction of the various species. Such data could then be used to verify or refine the currently proposed model. 

Primary field operations include exploration, development, and the primaiy, secondary, and tertiary production of oil or gas. Crude oil processing, such as water separation, deemulsifying, degassing, and storage at tank batteries associated with a specific well or wells, are examples of primary field operations. Furthermore, because natural gas often requires processing to remove water and other impurities prior to entering the sales fine, gas plants are considered to be part of production operations regardless of their location with respect to the wellhead.

The main plant and reactor control room will be outside the reactor containment shell in the steam plant generator building. A full thickness of shielding wall separates the boiler and blower compartments from the reactor, and operating personnel will be able to conduct maintenance and inspection of these items while the reactor is in operation. This wall is penetrated by the concentric piping which carries the primaiy gas into and out of the reactor. To attenuate radiation streaming through the pipe, a turn is made within the shield.
