Fluid power encompasses most applications that use liquids or gases to transmit power in the form of mechanical work, pressure and/or volume in a system. This definition includes all systems that rely on pumps or compressors to transmit specific volumes and pressures of liquids or gases within a closed system. The complexity of these systems range from a simple centrifugal pump used to remove casual water from a basement to complex airplane control systems that rely on high-pressure hydraulic systems.

Plastics are no different in this respect than other materials. If steel, aluminum, and ceramics were to be made into a different complex shapes and no prior history on their behavior for that processing shape existed, a period of trial and error would be required to ensure their meeting the required measurements. If relevant processing information or experience did exist, it would be possible for these metallic (or plastic) products to meet the requirements with the first product produced. Experience on new steel shapes always took trial and error time that included different shaped high pressure hydraulic steel cylinders that failed in service when used in a new injection molding hydraulically operating machine (author s experience).

It should he pointed out that the term microemulsion, or suhmirrometer emulsinn, has also been applied to thermodynamically unstable, two-phase systems in which the drop size was made extremely small by physical methods, such as high-pressure hydraulic shear (cf. Ref. 22). Such systems should be more appropriately called mini- or itanoemulsions. 

The movements of hydraulic components are controlled by valves. With hydraulic rams, directional valves supply pressurized hydraulic oil to one or the other side of the piston, so that this moves in the desired direction. 

Remote actuated valves must be chosen to match process requirements. Design decisions include materials of construction, valve seat material, valve t q)e, actuator type and controls characteristics. The design must match utility supply levels (air pressure, hydraulic pressure, flow capacity) and tolerances with actuator design to provide the correct torque/thrust to the valve. The torque/thrust must be above breakaway requirements and must be below stress limits of the drive train. With some valves, the ratio of these values may limit the available operating safety factor. 

The components of a hydraulic system are similar to those of the pneumatic system. Figure 11-14 shows the components of a hydraulic system. The pressure of the hydraulic fluid is provided by the system s pump. The hydraulic pump is a device that creates flow in the system. The reservoir stores the hydraulic fluid before it is pressurized by the pump. Transmission lines carry the pressurized hydraulic fluid to the control valve and actuators. The control valves regulate the flow and pressure of the hydraulic fluid. The actuators transfer the fluid power into mechanical power.
