A vacuum system can be constmcted that includes a solar panel, ie, a leak-tight, instmmented vessel having a hole through which a gas vacuum pump operates. An approximate steady-state base pressure is estabUshed without test parts. It is assumed that the vessel with the test parts can be pumped down to the base pressure. In general, the test object caimot be heated above its operating temperature in space. As free molecular conditions are obtained around the object, it outgases and, if solar-spectmm photons impinge on the object, increases the release of gas. Because the object is in a vessel and the area of the hole lea ding to the gas pump is small compared with the projected interior area of the vessel, molecules originating from the test object can return to the test object provided that they do not interact in some manner with the vessel walls and the other components of the molecular environment. The object inside the vessel estabhshes an entirely different system than the clean, dry, and empty vacuum vessel. Concentration of Seawater by ED. In terms of membrane area, concentration of seawater is the second largest use. Warm seawater is concentrated by ED to 18 to 20% dissolved soHds using membranes with monovalent-ion-selective skins. The EDR process is not used. The osmotic pressure difference between about 19% NaCl solution and partially depleted seawater is about 20,000 kPa (200 atm) at 25°C, which is well beyond the range of reverse osmosis. Salt is produced from the brine by evaporation and crystallisa tion at seven plants in Japan and one each in South Korea, Taiwan, and Kuwait. A second plant is soon to be built in South Korea. None of the plants are justified on economic grounds compared to imported solar or mined salt. [Pg.176]

Thermal expan sion. Equipment and pipehues which are liquid-full under normal operating conditions are subject to hydrauhc expansion if the temperature increases. Common sources of heat that can result in high pressures due to thermal expansion include solar radiation, steam or other heated tracing, heating coils, and heat transfer from other pieces of equipment. [Pg.2289]
