Pregnancy dating

Positive urine human chorionic gonadotropin followed by positive ultrasound, fetal heart sounds, and/or fetal movement. Pregnancy Dating and Gestational Age Calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period. [Pg.724]

The intense activity in this field—it has been estimated that as many as a thousand analogs have been prepared to date-promises a number of drugs in the near future. At this writing, two prostaglandins are available for use by the clinician. Both these compounds, dinoprost (7, PGFaa) and dinoprostone (S, PGE2), are used for the termination of pregnancy in the second trimester. [Pg.27]

Determine trimesters and a due date for a pregnancy based on the last menstrual period. [Pg.721]

PBPK and classical pharmacokinetic models both have valid applications in lead risk assessment. Both approaches can incorporate capacity-limited or nonlinear kinetic behavior in parameter estimates. An advantage of classical pharmacokinetic models is that, because the kinetic characteristics of the compartments of which they are composed are not constrained, a best possible fit to empirical data can be arrived at by varying the values of the parameters (O Flaherty 1987). However, such models are not readily extrapolated to other species because the parameters do not have precise physiological correlates. Compartmental models developed to date also do not simulate changes in bone metabolism, tissue volumes, blood flow rates, and enzyme activities associated with pregnancy, adverse nutritional states, aging, or osteoporotic diseases. Therefore, extrapolation of classical compartmental model simulations... [Pg.233]

Rifaximin appeared to be effective and safe in both adults and children. Not only do these data support the efficacy of a nonabsorbable antibiotic in the treatment of diarrhea, the lack of absorption and degree of safety reported to date support the likelihood that rifaximin will be safe to use in pregnant women. Currently, the drugs of choice for the treatment of bacterial diarrhea, especially travelers diarrhea, are the fluoroquinolones, which are contraindicated in pregnancy. While rifaximin will likely never be adequately studied in pregnancy, it should be safe. [Pg.78]

When tricyclic antidepressants are withdrawn during pregnancy, they should be tapered gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms. If possible, drug tapering is usually begun 5 to 10 days before the estimated date of confinement. [Pg.373]

From the date that a sample is taken, it may take a few weeks to several months to receive the test results. Results for prenatal testing are usually available more quickly because time is an important consideration in making decisions about a pregnancy. The doctor or genetic counselor who orders a particular test can provide specific information about the cost and time frame associated with that test. [Pg.42]

Answer In this case, the decision to induce labor is appropriate. In caring for patients, physicians must decide who are appropriate patients for labor induction. The median length of human pregnancy is 40 weeks (when using the woman s menstrual period to date the pregnancy). Pregnancy is considered to be full-term from the 37 0/7 weeks to 41 6/7 weeks. [Pg.723]

Preventative vaccines are increasingly used during pregnancy, with the intention of protecting the newborn baby from infectious disease, such as influenza, via conferred immunity from the mother (1). To date, no causal relationships have been demonstrated for adverse effects on pregnancy with any approved vaccine. However, potential mechanisms have been suggested by which an induced immune response could interfere with prenatal development. A nonspecific disturbance of the resting balance between the innate and humoral activities of the immune system, for instance, could result in abortion (2). Otherwise, the induced antibodies may have the potential to disturb normal development due to a specific... [Pg.81]

The toxicity of H. procumbens is considered extremely low. To date, there have been no reported side-effects following its use. However, this plant is said to have oxytocic properties and should be avoided in pregnancy. In addition, due to its reflex effect on the digestive system, it should be avoided in patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers. [Pg.330]

Mul T, Mongelli M, Gardosi J (1996) A comparative analysis of second-trimester ultrasound dating formulae in pregnancies conceived with artificial reproductive techniques. Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol, 8(6) 397-402. [Pg.155]

The current difficulty in many reports of second-generation complications is to determine whether the mother actually took diethylstilbestrol during her pregnancy. In a case of a very large clear-cell carcinoma of the cervix in a teenager with no known history of maternal use of diethylstilbestrol, in view of the dates it was likely to have been non-drug-related, but the possibility of third-generation effects must also be borne in mind (13). [Pg.167]

The recommended dosage of clomiphene citrate at the beginning of therapy is 50 mg/d for 5 days. If ovulation occurs, this same course may be repeated until pregnancy is achieved. If ovulation does not occur, the dosage is doubled to 100 mg/d for 5 days. If ovulation and menses occur, the next course can be started on the fifth day of the cycle. Experience to date suggests that patients who do not ovulate after three courses of 100 mg/d of clomiphene are not likely to respond to continued therapy. However, larger doses are effective in some individuals. Clomiphene is sometimes used in combination with gonadotropins, ie, a combination of LH and FSH. [Pg.964]
