In silico property prediction is needed more than ever to cope with the screening overload. Improved prediction technologies are continuing to emerge [13,14]. However, reliably measured physicochemical properties to use as training sets for new target applications have not kept pace with the in silico methodologies.

In this chapter, we have outlined roles of microwave chemistry in the establishment of green and sustainable chemistry. Many examples, mostly from the authors laboratories, have been presented of green microwave processes under solvent-free conditions or with solvents, including high-temperature water. Developed in 1965, the hammermill has been replaced by conical screen mills particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. The main benefits of the conical screen mill includes low noise, low dust, a tighter particle size distribution, flexibility to mill both wet and dry material, ability to be flood fed and generally a higher capacity due to the 360 discharge available with the conical design. 

Spectrum Simulation is a method for creating spectra from information about the chemical structure of a molecule, for which none exist this is typically supported by prediction technologies, such as artificial neural networks. 

The overall objective is to develop ways to model the reactions, eventually leading to predictive technologies. Several excellent reviews of aromatics saturation are available.4 6... 

D. Maintainability review This three pronged approach to improving equipment reliability is based on failure analysis to identify root causes, testing of equipment immediately after repair to ensure quality work was performed, and performance analysis of equipment to determine equipment efficiency rates and replacement intervals. This methodology uses predictive technologies. 

Effective preventive/predictive maintenance programs will be used to anticipate and predict maintenance problems in order to eliminate the uncertainty of expected breakdowns and high repair costs. Predictive maintenance wiU not be limited solely to the detection of failure but will proactively identify and eliminate the root causes of chronic problems. Preventive/ predictive maintenance programs will be adequately staffed to cover adl major assets within the operation. Maintenance wiU maintain current techniceil knowledge and experience for applying a combination of predictive technologies that is best suited for the specific application or system.

The first lUPAC Symposium on the Characterization of Porous Solids was held in 1987 (i.e. COPS I, Elsevier, 1988) and it was evident then that there was a need for further systematic work. In his introductory paper, Everett drew attention to some of the outstanding problems including the important requirement of predicting technological performance from the results of characterization measurements. This became all the more urgent with the development of advanced materials and shape selective catalysts which require the application of sophisticated characterization techniques.
