Poster campaigns

For one study, safety personnel at the shipyard gave work teams weekly feedback regarding compliance with sign instructions (Saarela et al., 1989). In the other study, environmental audits, group discussions, and structured interviews were used to develop the poster messages (Saarela, 1989). Thus, it is possible that factors other than the posters themselves contributed to the moderate short-term impact of this intervention approach. All of these factors are covered in this Handbook, including ways to maximize the beneficial effects of safety signs (in Chapter 10).

Employees who have experienced training courses, videos, computer animations, or virtual environments can be reminded of that experience through poster campaigns, leaflets, and other more traditional safety communication media.

Preventive and educational actions directed towards the whole community (eg, poison prevention campaigns, posters demonstrating the dango of poisonings from chemicals) for specific groups at risk (eg, safe use of pesticides for nu woricers, risks of contact with specific chemicals in the workplace). The methods and techniques employed for the prevention and generating awareness about poisonings should be ad ted to each nation s situation and circumstances. 

Safety culture change is what many safety professionals do on a smaller scale, often with frustrating results. Safety campaigns, posters, training, and other efforts are ineffective, and their results are often short-lived because they do not change the way the organization does business. The policies and structures were not the only BR health and safety initiatives. Running alongside the hierarchical structures for health and safety were training programmes and documentary sources of information such as videos, posters, publications, and a variety of general and local health and safety campaigns. A campaign using posters to draw attention to the need to address potential accidents, including lifting and back injuries, is one way to increase awareness of safe work practices and techniques. The plant medical staff and a team of instructors should conduct regular tours of the site to look for potential hazards and allow input from workers. 

Regardless of the kind of award system you design, you will have to create an internal marketing campaign to promote your safety effort with employees. You will want to consider posters, announcements in safety meetings, articles in... 

If safety is to be sold to a workforce, management needs to use the tools of the salesperson. Safety can be sold using videos, posters, brochures, and safety campaigns. CG animations are already used extensively by the advertising industry, and these animations are ideal tools for getting a message across to a workforce. Abstract and symbolic ideas can be used to place an impression and scenario into the minds of mine personnel.
