Possible Future Elements

Some expanded periodic tables of chemical elements have been developed that include future elements up to the proton number 152 or 202. Someday the existence of new heavy elements may be realized if the United States once again takes the lead in particle physics and related research.

And if this were the case, then it would be physically possible for there to be two elements between say Z = 19 and Z = 20 to use Le Poidevin s example. Let us further suppose that a future theory might hold that the fundamental particles are some form of sub-quarks with a charge of 0.1 units. Under these conditions combinatorialism would lead to die existence of nine physical possibilities between elements 19 and 20, and so on. It would appear that Le Poidevin s distinction between a physical possibility, as opposed to a merely logical one, is dependent on the state of knowledge of fundamental particles at any particular epoch in the history of science which is surely not what Le Poidevin intends. Indeed die distinction proposed by Le Poidevin would appear to be susceptible to a form of vacuity, not altogether unlike the threat of vacuity which is faced by physicalism, and which was supposed to be circumvented by appeal to combinatorialism. 

The paper by Stafford shows the ways in which psychedelics tend to be used at present in the community of users. The substance spoken of as "Yage" was probably not Yage, but harmine or harmaline. Of special interest are the use of one psychochemical to ameliorate any difficulty arising from the use of another, and the use of marijuana in conjunction with the experience without any thought that the marijuana might influence the experience. Elements of this experience lead Mr. Stafford to speculate on psychedelics in general and their possible future impact on society. 

Fusion (nuclear) The combining or fusing together of lighter elements in the cores of stars and possibly future reactors to produce heavier elements and energy. 

On the other hand, the voyager may also feel that he possesses supernormal powers of perception and movement, that he can perform miracles, extraordinary feats of bodily control etc. The Tibetan book definitely attributes paranormal faculties to the consciousness of the Bardo voyager and explains it as due to the fact that the Bardo-consciousness encompasses future elements as well as past. Hence clairvoyance, telepathy, ESP, etc. are said to be possible. Objective evidence does not indicate whether this sense of increased perceptiveness is real or illusory. We therefore leave this as an open question, to be decided by empirical evidence. 

It was only possible to list and describe a small selection of the possible screw elements in this chapter. Without doubt, the future will bring yet more specialized elements for specialized processes and products. 

Chapter 10 explains the chemistry and physics that underlie the basic properties of the alkali and the alkaline earth metals. In addition, it presents possible future developments that involve these two families of elements. 

A number of very useful and practical element selective detectors are covered, as these have already been interfaced with both HPLC and/or FIA for trace metal analysis and spe-ciation. Some approaches to metal speciation discussed here include HPLC-inductively coupled plasma emission, HPLC-direct current plasma emission, and HPLC-microwave induced plasma emission spectroscopy. Most of the remaining detection devices and approaches covered utilize light as part of the overall detection process. Usually, a distinct derivative of the starting analyte is generated, and that new derivative is then detected in a variety of ways. These include HPLC-photoionization detection, HPLC-photoelectro-chemical detection, HPLC-photoconductivity detection, and HPLC-photolysis-electrochemical detection. Mechanisms, instrumentation, details of interfacing with HPLC, detector operations, as well as specific applications for each HPLC-detector case are presented and discussed. Finally, some suggestions are provided for possible future developments and advances in detection methods and instrumentation for both HPLC and FIA. 

Rather than relying solely on these after-the-event measures, an audit provides a before-the-fact measure of control activities. A more valid comparison from year-to-year or site-to-site becomes possible. All elements of the plan, or the health and safety management system, can be critically reviewed so that priorities for future action may be determined.
