The promise shown by supercritical fluid extraction led to the development of the Solexol process for the purification and separation of vegetable and fish oils. This process concentrated the polyunsaturated triglycerides in vegetable oils and the so-called vitamin A values from fish oils using propane as a selective solvent [5]. [Pg.416]

Polyunsaturated triglycerides have less ordered structures and do not pack together so closely or so compacdy as saturated triglycerides. As a consequence, intramolecular and intermolecular dispersion forces are weaker, with the result that polyunsaturated triglycerides have lower melting points than their saturated counterparts. [Pg.652]

Sulfated Natural Oils and Fats. Sulfated natural triglycerides were the first nonsoap commercial surfactants introduced in the middle of the nineteenth century. Since then sulfates of many vegetable, animal, and fish oils have been investigated (see also Fats AND FATTY oils). With its hydroxyl group and a double bond, ricinoleic acid (12-hydroxy-9,10-octadecenoic acid) is an oil constituent particularly suited for sulfation. Its sulfate is known as turkey-red oil. Oleic acid is also suited for sulfation. Esters of these acids can be sulfated with a minimum of hydrolysis of the glyceride group. Polyunsaturated acids, with several double bonds, lead to dark-colored sulfation products. The reaction with sulfuric acid proceeds through either the hydroxyl or the double bond. A molecular variation of plasma membrane has been reported by Puccia et al. Reduction of total lipids (XL) content and significant variations of triglyceride (TG) and phospholipids (PL) fractions were observed as a consequence of exposure of C. intestinalis ovaries to TBTCl solutions. In particular, an evident TG decrease and a PL increase were observed, which probably provoked an increment in membrane fluidity, because of the high concentration of long chain fatty acids and, as a consequence, PL. This could be a cell-adaptive standing mechanism toward the pollutants, as observed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
