A number of high melting poiat semiaromatic nylons, iatroduced ia the 1990s, have lower moisture absorption and iacreased stiffness and strength. Apart from nylon-6 /6,T (copolymer of 6 and 6,T), the exact stmcture of these is usually proprietary and they are identified by trade names. Examples iaclude Zytel HTN (Du Pont) Amodel, referred to as polyphthalamide or PPA (Amoco) and Aden (Mitsui Petrochemical). Properties for polyphthalamide are given ia Table 2. A polyphthalamide has been defined by ASTM as "a polyamide ia which the residues of terephthaUc acid or isophthahc acid or a combination of the two comprise at least 60 molar percent of the dicarboxyhc acid portion of the repeating stmctural units ia the polymer chain" (18). As with the aliphatic polyamides such as nylons 6 and 66, the polyphthalamides were developed as plastics materials only after their sucessful use in the field of fibres. Such materials were introduced in 1991 by Amoco under the trade name of Amodel. [Pg.516]

While additive analysis of polyamides is usually carried out by dissolution in HFIP and hydrolysis in 6N HC1, polyphthalamides (PPAs) are quite insoluble in many solvents and very resistant to hydrolysis. The highly thermally stable PPAs can be adequately hydrolysed by means of high pressure microwave acid digestion (at 140-180 °C) in 10 mL Teflon vessels. This procedure allows simultaneous analysis of polymer composition and additives [643]. Also the polymer, oligomer and additive composition of polycarbonates can be examined after hydrolysis. However, it is necessary to optimise the reaction conditions in order to avoid degradation of bisphenol A. In the procedures for the analysis of dialkyltin stabilisers in PVC, described by Udris [644], in some instances the methods can be put on a quantitative basis, e.g. the GC determination of alcohols produced by hydrolysis of ester groups. Semi-aromatic PAs are copolymers of an aromatic diacid and a linear diamine or a linear diacid and an aromatic diamine. Polyphthalamide (PPA) and polyarylamide (PAA) are semi-aromatic, semi-crystalline PAs. Some amorphous semi-aromatic PAs are transparent. [Pg.374]
