Since slower-curing epoxy adhesives systems flow over and wet high-energy surfaces very well, there is little chance for air to become trapped at the interface. As a result, mechanical abrasion is often recommended as a substrate surface treatment prior to application of the epoxy adhesive. The added surface area and the mechanical bonding provided by the additional peaks and valleys on the surface will enhance adhesive strength. If the adhesive does not wet the substrate surface well, such as in the case of epoxy resin on polyethylene, mechanical abrasion is not recommended since it will only encourage the probability of gas voids being trapped at the interface.

Regarding mechanical properties of polymers, the efficiency of the Car-Parrinello approach has enabled us to evaluate the ultimate Young s modulus of orthorhombic polyethylene, and demonstrate basis set convergence for that property. 

The mounting cup (ferrule for botde valves) mechanically joins the valve to the container. The mounting cup may be made from a variety of materials, but is typically tin-plated steel coated on the underside. It contains the gasket which provides the seal. Soft gasketing material is appHed wet and bonded in place or, more frequently in larger cans, cut mbber, polyethylene, or polypropylene gaskets are used. 

The actuator contains the final orifice and a finger pad or mechanical linkage for on—off control. The spray pattern is largely affected by the constmction of the actuator, particularly by the chamber preceding the orifice. Actuators are often termed mechanical breakup and nonmechanical breakup depending upon the complexity of this chamber. Mechanical breakup actuators are of more expensive two-piece constmction. Actuators are usually molded from polyethylene or polypropylene the breakup insert may be almost any material, including metal. 

The film is fibrillated mechanically by mbbing or bmshing. Immiscible polymers, such as polyethylene or polystyrene (PS), may be added to polypropylene to promote fibrillation. Many common fiber-texturing techniques such as stuffer-box, false-twist, or knife-edge treatments improve the textile characteristics of slit-film fibers.

Commonly used materials for cable insulation are poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) compounds, polyamides, polyethylenes, polypropylenes, polyurethanes, and fluoropolymers. PVC compounds possess high dielectric and mechanical strength, flexibiUty, and resistance to flame, water, and abrasion. Polyethylene and polypropylene are used for high speed appHcations that require a low dielectric constant and low loss tangent. At low temperatures, these materials are stiff but bendable without breaking. They are also resistant to moisture, chemical attack, heat, and abrasion. Table 14 gives the mechanical and electrical properties of materials used for cable insulation. 

Degradation of polyolefins such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, and polybutadiene promoted by metals and other oxidants occurs via an oxidation and a photo-oxidative mechanism, the two being difficult to separate in environmental degradation. The general mechanism common to all these reactions is that shown in equation 9. The reactant radical may be produced by any suitable mechanism from the interaction of air or oxygen with polyolefins (42) to form peroxides, which are subsequentiy decomposed by ultraviolet radiation. These reaction intermediates abstract more hydrogen atoms from the polymer backbone, which is ultimately converted into a polymer with ketone functionahties and degraded by the Norrish mechanisms (eq. 

CSPE. Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE), a synthetic mbber manufactured by DuPont, is marketed under the name Hypalon. It can be produced as a self-curing elastomer designed to cure on the roof. The membrane is typically reinforced with polyester and is available in finished thicknesses of 0.75 to 1.5 mm. Because CSPE exhibits thermoplastic characteristics before it cures, it offers heat-weldable seams. After exposure on the roof, the membrane cures offering the toughness and mechanical set of a thermoset. The normal shelf life of the membrane for maintaining this thermoplastic characteristic is approximately six months. After the membrane is fully cured in the field, conventional adhesives are needed to make repairs. 

The prime installation method is mechanically fastened but fully adhered and ballasted appHcations can also be used. CSPE exhibits strong resistance not only to weathering but also to a broad range of chemicals and pollutants it is also inherently ozone-resistant. It can be produced in many colors and the sheet widths are typically 5—6.5 ft (1.5—1.65 m). The physical characteristics of a CSPE sheet have been described (17) (see Elastomers, SYNTHETIC-Cm OROSULFONATED POLYETHYLENE). 

Electrical Applications. Plastics are used for electrical insulation, conduit and enclosures, lighting fixtures, and mechanical devices. The most widely used plastic for wire and cable insulation is flexible, plasticized PVC, which constitutes well over half the market in insulating wires for buildings, automobiles, appHances, and power and control lines. Polyethylene is also a factor. Higher performance plastics such as nylon and fluoropolymers also play a smaller role in this area. 

Linear polyethylene (high density) was introduced in the late 1950s, with the development of coordination catalysts. Chlorosulfonation of these base resins gave products that were superior to the eadier, low density types in both chemical resistance and mechanical properties and with distinct advantages in mbber processibiUty (6,7).
