Polyethers. Antibiotics within this family contain a number of cycHc ether and ketal units and have a carboxyHc acid group. They form complexes with mono- and divalent cations that ate soluble ia aoapolar organic solvents. They iateract with bacterial cell membranes and allow cations to pass through the membranes causiag cell death. Because of this property they have been classified as ionophores. Monensia, lasalocid, and maduramicia are examples of polyethers that are used commercially as anticoccidial agents ia poultry and as growth promotants ia mmiaants. [Pg.474]

Coccidiosis is a proto2oal disease of the intestinal tract of animals that leads to severe loss of productivity and death. The development and widespread use of anticoccidials has revolutionized the poultry industry. The estimated world market for anticoccidial agents in 1989 was 425 million and this was dominated by the polyether ionophore antibiotics monensin, salinomycin [53003-10-4], n imsm [55134-13-9], la.s9locid, and maduramicin [84878-61-5] (26). [Pg.476]

Heat-SensitiZingProcess. Another process used to make latex mbber articles of thicker section involves sensitizing the compound so that it coagulates when heated to a given temperature, then using heated molds to build the article to the desired thickness. Surface active agents are important components of foam formulations. They decrease the surface tension of the system and facilitate the dispersion of water in the hydrophobic resin. In addition they can aid nucleation, stabilise the foam and control cell structure. A wide range of such agents, both ionic and non-ionic, has been used at various times but the success of the one-shot process has been due in no small measure to the development of the water-soluble polyether siloxanes. These are either block or graft copolymers of a polydimethylsiloxane with a polyalkylene oxide (the latter usually an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymer). Formulations for one-shot polyether systems are similar to those used for flexible foams and contain polyether, isocyanate, catalyst, surfactant and water. Trichloroethyl phosphate is also often used as a flame retardant. As with polyesters, diphenylmethane di-isocyanate is usually preferred to TDI because of its lower volatility. Tertiary amines and organo-tin catalysts are used as with the flexible foams but not necessarily in combination. Silicone oil surfactants are again found to be good foam stabilisers. Saturated hydrocarbons such as neopentane, notbomane, and cyclooctane have been converted to the corresponding perfluoro derivatives in 10-20% yield by gas-phase reaction with fluorine gas diluted with helium at —78°C. Simple ethers can be completely fluorinated under similar conditions. Crown polyethers can be fluorinated by passing an Fa/He stream over a solid mixture of sodium fluoride and the crown ether. Liquid-phase fluorination of hydrocarbons has also been observed, but the reaction is believed to be ionic, rather than radical, in character. Polyether-based foams account for more than 90% of all flexible polyurethane foams. The properties of foams are controlled by the molecular structure of the precursors and the reaction conditions. In general, density decreases as the amount of water increases, which increases the evolution of carbon dioxide. However, the level of water that can be used is limited by the highly exothermic nature of its reaction with isocyanate, which carries with it the risk of self-ignition of the foamed product. If very low density foams are desired, additional blowing agents, such as butane, are incorporated within the mixing head. [Pg.390]
