The curing of CR adhesives is different from that for most rubber-based adhesives as it involves the labile chlorine atoms. This is reflected in the compounding ingredients. The main components of adhesives are polymeric materials such as elastomers or synthetic polymers. The main component type for a certain adhesive is decided hy the designer considering the type of adherends and use conditions. Control items to he considered is as follows solubility parameters, average molecular weights, Mooney viscosity, crystallinity, and existence or nonexistence of functional groups. Materials that can be used as main components of elastomer adhesives are polychloroprene rubbers, nitrile rubbers (butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer), SBR (styrene-butadiene copolymer), thermoplastic elastomers (SBS, SIS, SEBS, SEPS etc.), butyl rubbers, acryhc rubbers, sUicone rubbers, polysulfides, modified polysulfides, modified silicone rubbers, and silyl urethanes. [Pg.1012]

Rosins and rosin derivatives. The resins more commonly used in rubber base adhesives are rosin esters, particularly glycerol and pentaerythritol esters, as well as rosins modified by disproportionation and hydrogenation. The glycerol ester of hydrogenated rosin has been reported to be an excellent tackifier for polychloroprene adhesives (see pp. 344-357 in [17]). [Pg.598]

Standard-grade PSAs are usually made from styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), natural rubber, or blends thereof in solution. In addition to rubbers, polyacrylates, polymethylacrylates, polyfvinyl ethers), polychloroprene, and polyisobutenes are often components of the system ([198], pp. 25-39). These are often modified with phenolic resins, or resins based on rosin esters, coumarones, or hydrocarbons. Phenolic resins improve temperature resistance, solvent resistance, and cohesive strength of PSA ([196], pp. 276-278). Antioxidants and tackifiers are also essential components. Sometimes the tackifier will be a lower molecular weight component of the high polymer system. The phenolic resins may be standard resoles, alkyl phenolics, or terpene-phenolic systems ([198], pp. 25-39 and 80-81). Pressure-sensitive dispersions are normally comprised of special acrylic ester copolymers with resin modifiers. The high polymer base used determines adhesive and cohesive properties of the PSA. [Pg.933]

Prane (11) reviews the field and concentrates on history citing pivotal patents related to acrylics (or reactive ) adhesives. These patents show that numerous materials have been utilized in toughening acrylic adhesivesr some nonreactive in the systems, others reacting in, while still others using combinations of each general type modifier. Thus, we find examples for polychloroprene, thermoplastic urethanes, urethane adducts, acrylic rubber, chlorosulfonated polyethylene in addition to buta-diene/acrylonitrile rubber (or its carboxylic version). [Pg.398]

Nitrile rubber is used preferably for contact adhesives with improved plasticizer resistance. Polyisobutylene is used in pressure-sensitive adhesives. Butyl rubber is sometimes added to pressure-sensitive and hot-melt adhesives, although it is mainly used in sealing compounds. Epoxy resins and reactive (meth)acrylate adhesives (reactive adhesives) are modified with polychloroprene, butyl, and nitrile rubber. Chlorinated rubber is added in small quantities to contact adhesives and also to rubber-to-metal bonding agents for improving the adhesion properties. [Pg.11]

The most typical adhesive solvents are those based on elastomers, compounds characterized by the fact that they have a strong natural adhesiveness, especially in respect of themselves (the phenomenon of self-adhesion, the instantaneous adhesion of two films of glue after almost total evaporation of the solvent, is the basis for the composition of the contact glues especially neoprene-based (Fletcher 1971)). The basic chemical composition of neoprene synthetic rubber is polychloroprene (O Fig. 14.6). The polymer structure can be modified by copolymerizing chloroprene with, for example, 2,3-dichloro-1,3-butadiene to yield a family of materials with a broad range of chemical and physical properties. [Pg.322]
