Polyfvinyl ether

Standard-grade PSAs are usually made from styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), natural rubber, or blends thereof in solution. In addition to rubbers, polyacrylates, polymethylacrylates, polyfvinyl ethers), polychloroprene, and polyisobutenes are often components of the system ([198], pp. 25-39). These are often modified with phenolic resins, or resins based on rosin esters, coumarones, or hydrocarbons. Phenolic resins improve temperature resistance, solvent resistance, and cohesive strength of PSA ([196], pp. 276-278). Antioxidants and tackifiers are also essential components. Sometimes the tackifier will be a lower molecular weight component of the high polymer system. The phenolic resins may be standard resoles, alkyl phenolics, or terpene-phenolic systems ([198], pp. 25-39 and 80-81). Pressure-sensitive dispersions are normally comprised of special acrylic ester copolymers with resin modifiers. The high polymer base used determines adhesive and cohesive properties of the PSA. [Pg.933]

Most of the reported polyfvinyl ether) macromonomers have been prepared with a methacrylate end group which can be radically polymerized and which is non-reactive under cationic polymerization conditions [71-73]. Generally, the synthesis was based on the use of the functional initiator 30, which contains a methacrylate ester group and a function able to initiate the cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers. Such initiator can be obtained by the reaction of HI and the corresponding vinyl ether. With initiator 30 the polymerization of ethyl vinyl ether (EVE) was performed using I2 as an activator in toluene at -40 °C. The MW increased in direct proportion with conversion, and narrow MWD (Mw/Mn= 1.05-1.15) was obtained. The chain length could be controlled by the monomer to initiator feed ratio. Three poly(EVE) macromonomers of different length were prepared by this method Mn=1200,5400, and 9700 g mol-1. After complete... [Pg.48]

From the viewpoint of polymer synthesis, the multiplicity of the propagating species provides a possibility to synthesize polymers with varying structures from the different intermediates. In fact, the steric structure of, e.g., polystyrene, polyfvinyl ether)s, and poly(a-methylstyrene) can be controlled by selecting counteranions Recently, Kennedy and his associates studied in detail the control of chain transfer and termination by counteranions (initiators) in isobutene polymerization, and opened a new field of block and graft polymer synthesis (especially by their inifer method)... [Pg.51]

Over the past years considerable attention has been paid to the dispersing system since this controls the porosity of the particle. This is important both to ensure quick removal of vinyl chloride monomer after polymerisation and also to achieve easy processing and dry blendable polymers. Amongst materials quoted as protective colloids are vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride copolymers, fatty acid esters of glycerol, ethylene glycol and pentaerythritol, and, more recently, mixed cellulose ethers and partially hydrolysed polyfvinyl acetate). Much recent emphasis has been on mixed systems. [Pg.316]

Amorphous polymers are characterized by the following properties They are transparent and very often soluble in common organic solvents at room temperature. The following amorphous polymers have gained industrial importance as thermoplastic materials polyfvinyl chloride), polystyrene, polyfmethyl methacrylate), ABS-polymers, polycarbonate, cycloolefine copolymers, polysulfone, poly( ether sulfone), polyfether imide). [Pg.24]

Poly(vinyl ethyl ether) is soluble in ethanol, acetone and benzene. It is a rubbery product which may be cross-linked by heating with dicumyl peroxide. Polyfvinyl isobutyl ether), has a glass transition temperature of —5°C. It has been used as an adhesive for upholstery, cellophane and adhesive tape. [Pg.1356]

Miscibility doors can be observed when the homopolymer A is miscible with the homopolymer consisting of segments of type 2. Usually, only very near to the miscibility-immiscibility boundary can a temperature dependence of the phase behavior be seen, i.e. an LCST occurs. Figure 5 shows examples for miscibility doors. Further systems are listed in Table 1. Miscibility doors were also observed for blends of styrene copolymers and polyfvinyl methyl ether) (PVME) (Fig. 6, Table 2). In contrast to PPO/PS systems blends of PVME and PS... [Pg.43]
