Optical techniques have been used to clarify the electronic conduction mechanism and the electrochemical film conversion process [142-144]. Redondo et al. [143] employed ellipsometry [144] to optically probe films grown on platinum electrodes in hydrochloric acid solutions. The optical information may be used to draw conclusions on film density variations as a function of polymerization conditions and film thickness. More important, by potential cycling, films could be examined while undergoing conversions from the reduced (insulating) forms to the oxidized (conducting) forms. Redox reactions carried out on polyaniline-coated electrodes suggest that polyaniline conducts solely in its oxidized emeraldine salt state. [Pg.778]

Doped polyaniline (conductive) is a green powdery material with a bulk conductivity of 1-10 S/cm In this form it is insoluble in most solvents and infusible, therefore, it has been traditionally categorized as intractable polymer. The neutral or emeraldine base form of polyaniline is a coppery bronze powder with a conductivity of less than 10" S/cm. Polyaniline is an unique ICP in that its conductivity can be reversibly controlled chemically and electrochemically. The emeraldine base is soluble in a wide variety of amine solvents such as N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), N, N dimethylacetamide, dimethylformamide and N,N -dimethylpropylene urea (DMPU). However, even in these solvents the solubility is limited and solutions have limited stability. [Pg.174]

Poly(Af-acetylaniline) (PAANI), one of the substituted polyaniline conducting polymers, was successfiilly used as a support for fuel cell catalysts [84]. PEDOT/ PSS has also been reported as support material, with activities for oxygen reduction of Pt/PEDOT/PSS comparable with that obtained with commercial carbon-supported catalysts. However, long-term stability of PEDOT/PSS has to be improved and conductivity is still lower compared with carbon materials [85]. Choi et al. electrodeposited Pt-Ru catalysts on poly(Af-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) and poly(9-(4-vinyl-phenyl)carbazole) (P4VPCz). The performance of DMFCs with carbon-supported Pt-Ru showed better performance than that of the Pt-Ru/PVK composite due to its low electronic conductivity [86]. [Pg.82]
