Many acids can donate more than one proton. Examples are H2CO3, H3PO4, and [Al(H20)6l. These acids are referred to as polyprotic acids. Similarly, bases that can accept more than one proton, for example, OH , C03, a.nd NH, are polyprotic bases. Many important substances, for example, proteins or poly aery lie acids, so-called polyelectrolytic acids or bases, contain a large number of acidic or basic groups.

Originally, we were motivated to find ways to remove soluble uranium from water. Thus, we became interested in uranium coordination to carboxylate functions. This led to studies of uranium polymers. The hydrated uranyl ion, U022 + is found in contaminated waters. It is exceptionally stable. Water-soluble uranyl esters form by reactions between carboxylate anions and uranyl cations. Our group and many others sought ways to complex uranyl ions to polymers. This led us to the use of bis-carboxylates to form the uranium polymers represented by 105 below.240,241,242 IF polycondensations and aqueous solution polycondensations were used. Another approach involved making carboxylate complexes of uranyl ions with the sodium salt of poly (aery lie acid).243... 

In the initial phase of this work, attempts were made to prepare emulsions of 5% mineral oil in water by using only poly (acrylic acid) thickeners. The mineral oil was a pure clear, white grade with a viscosity of 100 mPa s at room temperature. Polymers A and B from the studies reported in the first half of this chapter were screened for their ability to emulsify the oil. In addition, two other grades of poly (aery lie acid) thickener (types C and D, with number-average molecular-weights of 1.25 million and 3 million, respectively) (1), and a hydrophobically modified poly (aery lie acid) were studied.

Competitive adsorptions do not only concern polymers and surfactants bearing the same charge in the presence of oppositely charged surfaces. Also, other examples have been described, such as polyacrylic acid competing with a nonionic surfactant at the ka-olinite surface [39] or the adsorption of SDS and poly (aery lie acid) onto alumina [40]. 

The composition of polyacrylic acid-crosslinked poly-Nvinylcaprolactam (PAA-CPVCL) complexes determined from the dependence of swelling coefficients of CPVCL on concentration of linear poly aery lie acid is equal to 1 1. The swelling coefficients of pure gel and gel-polymer complex in water-DMSO mixtures are compared in Figure 7. Poly-N-vinylcaprolactam gel undergoes sharp volume-phase transition in dependence of the thermodynamic quality of the solvent. In the case of gel-polymer complex at first the destruction of this complex occurs in mixtures containing up to 30 vol.% of DMSO, then the behavior of the system becomes similar to that for pure crosslinked polymer in water-DMSO mixtures.
